PCA is a national charity, dedicated to saving lives through early diagnosis and this post has a pivotal role to play in developing and implementing marketing and campaign strategies that raise awareness and support the generation of income across Scotland.
You will provide marketing and communications expertise to the PCA Team, be able to generate emotive and persuasive copy, be able to engage journalists and produce a variety of content for both print and digital communications channels.

Please note: This job is home-based anywhere in Scotland with the option to work from our Glasgow Office. The initial contract term is 12 months (likely to extend).
About PCA:
Pancreatic Cancer Action (PCA) was founded in 2010 by a rare survivor of the disease. We are a small, creative and passionate team committed to improving early diagnosis and saving lives. In August 2020, Pancreatic Cancer Action merged with Pancreatic Cancer Scotland making our team stronger than ever.
Pancreatic cancer has only a 7% survival rate and this figure has not improved significantly for over 50 years. Despite it being the 5th biggest cancer killer in the UK, pancreatic cancer receives only 3% of overall research funding.
With a strong focus on early diagnosis, it is PCA’s aim to improve survival rates through raising awareness, medical education, improved patient information and by funding research specifically into the early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Simply put, we want more people diagnosed in time for surgery, currently the only potential for a cure.
Main responsibilities:
- Support the development of PCA marketing and communications strategies across all activities including media and public relations, brand marketing, advertising, marketing, digital and social media and production of materials for PCA’s Scottish activity.
- Communicate PCA’s strategic objectives to Scottish audiences and keep them at the heart of all marketing initiatives. These include:Raising public awareness and knowledge of pancreatic cancer and its symptoms.
Education, awareness and training for the medical and healthcare communities.
Funding research specifically into early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.
Providing high-quality health information and publications.
- Work with the Fundraising Team, and specifically the Regional Fundraising Executive for Scotland, to maximise income from an annual calendar of events, campaigns and activities, that includes events such as The Kiltwalk, Edinburgh Marathon and Great Scottish Run.
- Support National and International awareness-raising campaigns such as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and World Pancreatic Cancer Day and the local implementation of activities.
- Be an integral part of the Marketing and Communications team which includes a Marketing and Communications Assistant, a Digital Marketing Executive and the Head of Marketing and Communications.
Campaign management:
- Marketing and Communications lead on all Scottish activity, delivering multi-channel marketing campaigns and projects, that include competitor research, setting objectives and KPIs, creating collateral, producing action plans and schedules, overseeing implementation, keeping within budget, and measuring effectiveness.
- Develop and deliver creative and impactful campaigns that engage with audiences, raise our profile and meet objectives.
- Work closely with the Digital Marketing Executive to provide integrated campaigns and activities that utilise all PCA digital channels.
- Manage third-party and agency relationships, responsible for briefing and campaign delivery ensuring it’s on time and to budget, and negotiating and managing costs as necessary.
- Be a brand ambassador, providing advice on the consistent use of the charity’s brand and supporting the development of the brand guidelines.
Press and PR:
- Increase the charity’s profile across Scottish media, and with influencers and external organisations.
- Be the contact for all Scottish press office enquiries and build strong relationships with the media so that PCA becomes a go-to and trusted source.
- Identify and source content and story leads.
- Draft and distribute press releases, comments and responses and secure media interviews to achieve media coverage for PCA.
- Sell in stories and pitch expert speakers.
- Co-ordinate and support all Scotland-based Media Volunteers.
Case Studies and Patient Stories:
- Source story leads and work with the wider PCA team to identify and maximise opportunities to capture more.
- Interview patients, family members and staff to sensitively capture engaging stories for us to use across a variety of channels.
- Sensitively edit and align personal stories provided by both patients and survivors of pancreatic cancer to PCA text style guidelines.
- Source quotes, videos and photographs to accompany each story, ensuring adherence to the consent process.
Content Creation:
- Develop creative and engaging content for a wide variety of audiences to ensure each piece achieves objectives.
- Produce creative and engaging copy for a wide variety of both online and offline channels including emails, magazines, websites, blogs, social media and adverts.
- Proofread all copy and provide a proofreading service to other PCA colleagues.
- Working with the Digital Marketing Executive to create Scotland-specific content for all digital channels including Scottish social media channels, webpages and newsletters.
- Attend Scottish events to capture quotes, photos and videos that could be used to create future marketing assets.
- Create briefing documents for any design work or work to be outsourced.
- Support the production of PCA’s annual Action magazine.
- Ensure all content aligns to text style and brand guidelines.
Other duties:
- Support Scottish social media channels (Facebook and Twitter) on a day-to day-basis, engaging with audiences, responding to comments and queries and nurturing relationships.
- Travel across the region to attend meetings and events and undertake a variety of activities.
- Deputise for the Head of Marketing and Communications when needed.
- Any other duty that the Head of Marketing and Communication considers appropriate.
