Job description

The Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service (CISS) in Hywel Dda provides non-clinical support to people affected by cancer. It is a public facing service that is frequently accessed by people with cancer at any stage of their illness, cancer survivors, family and carers of those affected by cancer as well as health care professionals. The CISS is now a mainstream NHS service within Cancer Services , having been initially funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and continues to work with a strong partnership with this Cancer Charity. The Hywel Dda CISS Team are looking for an additional CISS officer to join the existing team in this health board wide service.

The successful applicant will work alongside colleagues to provide a highly visible service across the health board region with a focus on access to information and support for people affected by cancer as close to peoples homes as possible, maximising links with local community networks. Information will be provided at four levels: the development of multiple information points that serve as access points into the service, drop in hubs at acute hospital sites at Withybush and Bronglais Hospitals, telephone and virtual appointments for service users and planned face to face appointments for more complex needs. The role involves equipping and empowering anyone affected by cancer to take ownership of the key issues that are impacting on their health and wellbeing whether practical, social , psychological or spiritual. Providing low level psychological support is a key part of this role as well as onward referral to other specialist services such as CaPS, Welfare Benefits Team etc when specific needs are identified.

Hywel Dda University Health Board is the planner and provider of NHS healthcare services for people in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and its bordering counties. Our 11,000 members of staff provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services for around 384,000 people across a quarter of the landmass of Wales. We do this in partnership with our three local authorities and public, private and third sector colleagues, including our volunteers, through:

Four main hospitals: Bronglais General in Aberystwyth, Glangwili General in Carmarthen, Prince Philip in Llanelli and Withybush General in Haverfordwest;
Seven community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron, Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire Hospital Health and Social Care Resource Centre in Pembrokeshire;
48 general practices (four of which are managed practices), 47 dental practices (including three orthodontic), 99 community pharmacies, 44 general ophthalmic practices (43 providing Eye Health Examination Wales and 34 low vision services) and 17 domiciliary only providers and 11 health centres;
Numerous locations providing mental health and learning disabilities services;
Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.
