Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic new member to join the central IT services (ISS) at Lancaster University to play a key role in supporting Linux services across the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) and wider University.

As a Linux Support Specialist you will be working in the Faculty IT team of the central IT services (ISS). You will be working closely with colleagues in ISS but also with IT support colleagues across the departments of FST to provide an excellent support service for the use of Linux within teaching and research. You will use your skills to pull together Linux experience across ISS and FST along with your own experience, to develop and deliver Linux support for academic, research and support staff within FST. Working with researchers and research teams, you will understand their IT needs and deliver a great IT service. Your work will set support standards for Linux across the wider university.

Applicants for this post should have:

  • Experience of working in a team-based IT service environment as well as experience of supporting Linux systems.
  • Excellent Linux deployment and administration skills
  • Excellent analytical, technical and communications skills.
  • Ability to combine technical and problem-solving skills with a strong user-focus to ensure excellent service and support.
  • Ability to juggle priorities and balance long-term and short-term demands.
  • A degree, professional qualification or career experience in a relative field

One or more of the following would be advantageous:

  • Experience of integrating Linux with Microsoft Active Directory
  • Experience of Ansible/AWX for configuring and managing systems
  • Experience of grid/cluster management
