Licensed Animal Technician
Salary - £21,694.40 - £11.92 p/h from April 2023
Rota - Full Time 35 Hours Per Week
Shift - Sunday – Thursday (Sunday 5 Hrs, Mon-Thurs 7.5 Hrs)
(Both shifts will include occasional weekend working on a rota system – overtime will be paid for this if exceeds the 35hr week rota).
Please note – Charles River will fund and support all Licence training at your place of work.
Overall responsibility
To assist in the day-to-day welfare and maintenance of customer animal colonies within isolators in a genetically altered rodent production area. This will include breeding and stock husbandry, animal arrival and packing procedures as well as input to continuous improvement and personal development
Main duties/responsibilities
- Water and feed the animal colonies.
- Carry out routine husbandry and housekeeping i.e., clean the cages, the area and tools thoroughly and assist in isolator recycling following strict hygiene procedures.
- Contribute to and monitor closely the welfare of all animals within each colony, recording clinical signs and reporting variance
- Carry out weaning, sexing and identification, genotyping procedures.
- Monitor and report on project production levels with Project Co-ordinators
- Prepare customer animal shipments and receipts.
- Follow customer colony maintenance instructions accurately.
- Complete forms, cage cards and any other paperwork/data in a timely and accurate manner.
- Participate in training sessions as and when necessary and actively identify and utilise training opportunities.
- Using specific resources help implement best practice and continuous improvement

Qualifications and Knowledge
- Essential: Education to degree level or equivalent experience, including Animal Technician level 2, other animal related qualifications e.g., IAT or diploma in Animal Management/Care or A Level pass in Biology and animal husbandry experience.
- Desirable: Good understanding of Home Office and accreditation body (e.g., AAALAC) guidelines. Home Office personal licensee training Modules A&B, or Home Office Personal Licence previously held.
