Interview date: Wednesday 1st March 2023
Our library assistants are the key initial contact delivering a customer-facing library service, helping to deliver a high-quality enquiry service, providing information accurately and sign-posting to other services. It’s an active role; carrying books, pushing trolleys, lifting boxes and being on your feet for long periods of time. The job provides variety from welcoming a range of customers, solving basic library queries, helping customers use computers and supporting regular library events.
Experience and Skills
Our best library assistants are friendly, enthusiastic and resourceful people with excellent digital skills and able to multi-task in a busy library community space.
You will be a keen team player, able to work alongside other services and volunteers providing excellent customer service to the whole range of visitors to the library.
Flexibility is key as one moment you may be helping a customer log-on to the library Wi-Fi and download an eBook, the next leading a Baby Rhyme Time session for parents and babies, and then issuing a member of the public with their Disabled Blue Badge.
Qualifications-wise, 4 GCSEs with A-C passes including Maths and English or equivalent qualification/experience is required. Digital expertise and experience, particularly with basic Office applications, is a must.

- Assist customers using the self-service system, deal with enquiries, advise about library procedures and input straightforward information into the library system, e.g. to join a new member.
- Interpretation of straightforward problems and application of judgement to make decisions e.g. identify when to refer to a senior colleague.
- Shelving, tidying and careful handling of library stock, producing displays and maintaining resources.
- Communicate well with the public and colleagues in person, by email and telephone.
- Health and Safety: Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and healthy working environment for both staff and public by pointing out areas of concern.
- Equality: Support equality and diversity and respect customers, clients and other members of staff regardless of gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, religion or ethnic origin.
- Remain up-to-date and compliant with all relevant organisational procedures, policies and professional codes of conduct in order to uphold the standards of best practice.
