Job description
The Library Assistant will play an essential role in the delivery of frontline services to library users, including, delivering issue desk and enquiry services, core library and administrative work, shelving and tidying, and participating in the development of the library service. Desk duties are arranged on a rota basis. Deliver core counter services and enquiry services in accordance with agreed standards and procedures on a rota basis. The post holder is required to: Manage book circulation (e.g.
loans, returns, renewals, reservations, overdues, borrower information) during circulation desk duty using the automated library management system. Enter new library user data onto automated library system. Handle library income, using the cash register, from sources like stationery sales, service and facility charges. Generate and distribute overdue notices when on the enquiry desk.
Work within, and inform users of, library Complaints Policy. During desk duty, act as first point of call in resolving any user issues and complaints, referring them to the relevant member of the Library Management Team where required. Assist library users with IT problems, referring them to the Library Management Team or Cornwall IT Services or University of Plymouth IT support if necessary. Assist in the use of software programmes such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel.
Assist in the use of printers and photocopiers. Advise library users on compliance with national legislation such as Copyright regulations, Freedom of Information Act and Data Protection Act. Participate in the duty rota for late shifts (17.30 finish) with sole responsibility for the management of the library service when performing evening cover, including Health and Safety and security of the library. Assist users with information enquiries, which may be in-depth and detailed, in specialist subject areas.
Refer enquiries to another staff member if necessary. Deliver library inductions to individuals when requested, explaining use of the library, and providing handouts, forms and tours. Assist library users on an ad hoc basis in locating relevant literature using most appropriate resources available. Assist Senior Library Assistant with Inter Library Loans.
Involves: checking citation details of each request, locating supplying library based on ability to supply and by cost. Recording activity on a database, and dispatching documents by post or electronically. Responding to enquiries from library users and tracking supply/non-supply of items. In addition to these duties employees are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
