Library Services has a Library Assistant post work in a number of task-based teams as required. The role includes working on the Library Help Points to support students and staff in their use of the libraries, administrative tasks to provide student with the resources and services they need including inter-library loans, reservations and tasks related to overdue, claimed returns and missing items, handling of materials including shelving of returned materials and stock moves, and support to the
Director of Library Services and the Customer Services Co-ordinator to deliver customer care standards and maintain and develop library services to support the teaching, learning and research activities of the University. Key skills required include experience of customer services, excellent communication skills, IT skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
The post is permanent, subject to the normal probationary period of twelve months.

JOB DESCRIPTION/KEY DUTIES OF THE POST:
To maintain and develop services to support the learning, teaching, research, enterprise and partnership activities (in accordance with the University mission and key strategic goals) of the staff and students of, and visitors to, Liverpool Hope University in all of its locations.
Key Tasks / Responsibilities
Undertake a range of duties across the library service, including some or all of the following, under the direction of the appropriate member of library staff:
Customer Service:
- Staff all Library service points in all locations as required.
- Assist customers with first line help referring more complex or subject specific queries to the appropriate member of staff as necessary
- Check ID cards, books and other material to ensure that only authorised customers enter the library and that only authorised material is removed
- Provide practical help and guidance to users on the self-service machines, printer/copiers and other core IT equipment and systems such as the library management system, discovery tool, room booking system etc
- Issue, discharge and renew materials as necessary
- Undertake roving to monitor student behaviour and undertake first line advisory action, referring difficult situations to other staff as appropriate.
- Support the Director of Library Services and the Customer Services Co-ordinator to set and deliver customer care standards and ensure comparable standards at all service points
Library Administration
- Order, receipt, invoice and activate as appropriate, new materials in all formats on the Library Management System and using automated systems as appropriate.
- Receipt and handling of periodicals and newspapers in all formats
- Electronic claiming of outstanding periodicals issues using automated systems as appropriate
- De-duplicate print issues in line with electronic moving walls (e.g. JSTOR).
- Instigate relegation of journals at Creative Campus in line with current procedures
- One-off book purchases
- Distribution of new materials to appropriate location
- Liaison with Subject Librarians on issues related to orders/new materials in all formats
- Support Subject Librarians in the withdrawal of print materials
- Contribute to the discovery and maintenance of all electronic resources e.g. check A-Z list for dead links
- Filing of publisher’s catalogues
- All tasks related to Inter-Library Loan requests including books meeting the criteria for purchase over ILL order, and liaison with the British Library e.g. copyright cleared copies
- Process and satisfy reservation requests including those for Network of Hope colleges, liaise with academic staff and Subject Librarians over items that cannot be located and heavy demand items
- All tasks related to overdue, claimed returns and missing items including shelf checks, replacement costs and lost item processes
- Tasks to support students with Learning Support Plans (LSPs)
- Deal with lost property items
- Report faults and log transport requests with Estates colleagues
- Record statistics as necessary
- Assist with requests for material to be digitised
- Support Learning Skills and Spaces Co-ordinator to book student appointments with Mentors as required
Financial transactions
- Usage of credit/debit terminal in accordance with University Finance procedures
- Record and maintain accurate financial transactions as directed
Processing, shelving and revision
- Prepare and label new materials following library procedures
- Repair existing stock as appropriate
- Refer unrepairable materials to Subject Librarian
- Shelving of new, returned and used materials in all areas of the library including
Special Collections
- Tidying shelves and putting material back into classified order
Special Collections
- Assist in preparation of material to be used in teaching sessions and preparing the Reading room for sessions e.g. retrieving and displaying identified materials and returning materials after their use
- In the absence of the Special Collections Librarian supervise the Reading Room when students, staff or visiting researchers are working on materials in the
Reading Room
- Check potential donations for duplication in existing holdings and de-duplication of stock awaiting cataloguing
- Revision, processing, moving and tidying of stock
- Activities related to the Preservation Programme e.g. cleaning of rare books with measuring books for boxing, making images for box covers etc
- Projects as identified by the Special Collections Librarian
Other tasks
- Clerical work e.g. checking lists of material for duplicates, editing records on library system etc
- Undertake support work in the development and adoption of new systems within the Library that utilise new technologies
- Assist and support staff in other areas of the library as required
- To be involved in project or task and finish groups
- To undertake such other duties as prescribed by the Director of Library Services that are reasonable in relation to the effective operation and management of the service

Salary: £21,400.00-£23,149.00 per year
