This part-time position works with the Children’s Services Team to plan and present literature-based public programming for children and their families, both in the library and in outreach locations. The position also provides front-line services to patrons of all ages in the Children’s Department and performs other supportive duties. Creativity, high energy, ability to present to groups, and love of books and reading are essential. Position reports to the ARLS Regional Children’s Coordinator.


Minimum Training and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required, with college degree or college experience preferred. At least one year’s experience working with the public is required, with library experience and experience working with children preferred. Knowledge of children’s literature is required. A combination of education, training, and experience that provides requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position may also be considered. Must have, or be able to obtain, and maintain, a valid Georgia driver’s license with an insurable driving record.

Essential Job Functions

The following duties are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job. Other duties of a similar nature may be required and assigned, and job assignments and schedules may change in the future.

  • Provides direct customer service to library patrons of all ages, especially children and families, assisting with their information, readers’ advisory, and circulation needs.
  • Participates as a team member of Children’s Department staff in planning, developing and implementing programs, such as story times, puppet shows, storytelling concerts, introductory music and art experiences, crafts projects, and summer reading activities.
  • As assigned, develops, promotes, and implements library programs for children or other audiences, communicating all plans and program feedback to Children’s Services Coordinator.
  • Provides support in many areas of daily library operations, including (but not limited to) organizing materials; routing information; recording statistics; basic maintenance; performing basic office duties.
  • Re-shelves library materials in accurate location by alphabetical, numerical, chronological, or Dewey Decimal order and in a timely manner.
  • Drives to deliver library programs and materials offsite as assigned.
  • Must independently manage and operate Children’s Department during night and weekend work assignments, including following opening and closing procedures.
  • Assists and instructs library patrons in computer activities, including using the library’s catalog and databases, the Internet, children’s educational programs, and basic personal computing programs.
  • Helps create attractive and informative bulletin boards and displays.
  • Browses library literature, searches GALILEO databases, and becomes otherwise familiar with materials related to library service to children.
  • Upholds all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement; monitors and responds to safety and security of library patrons and campus; reports situations according to established procedures.
  • Meets System expectation to participate in at least two approved off-site outreach programs each year.
  • Meets System expectation to complete at least 10 hours of approved work-related training activities during each year of employment.

  • Knowledge of customer service principles and skill in providing efficient, positive, and professional customer service to patrons of all ages as well as to co-workers.
  • Skill in public speaking and program presentation techniques appropriate to the targeted audiences.
  • Specialized knowledge of children’s literature and age-appropriate craft, art, and musical activities..
  • Knowledge of basic library operational principles and practices and application of ARLS and A-CCL policies, procedures, and activities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with the public, co-workers, and supervisor.
  • Ability to remain calm under busy, stressful conditions.
  • Skill in using and understanding personal computers, programs, and the Internet for performing required duties and in assisting patrons with common computer applications and techniques.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to plan and prioritize assignments and activities.
  • Aptitude for creative projects such displays, crafts, and decorations.
  • Knowledge of all normal and emergency library building procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic office principles and skill in performing office support.
  • Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
  • Physical demand requirements are at levels of Medium Work.
