Job description
The Role
The role of the school librarian is key in the long term development of literacy standards within the school. The primary responsibility is to ensure a relevant and appropriate resource offering to enhance learning and activities throughout the school.
The librarian is expected to work collaboratively across a range of stakeholders both internally and externally and contribute to the reputation of the school when setting up external events and programmes of work.
The librarian is also expected to keep up to date with Young Adult Literature and Book Awards, such as Carnegies.
Main Responsibilities
- Maintain and develop key resources in the library in terms of reading materials and books.
- Liaise with academic departments regarding changes in the curriculum and any new resources needed.
- Promote diversity and empathy through reading.
- Manage the agreed budget appropriately and ensure relevant and timely provision and spend.
- Engage with members of the teaching staff to ensure that the library is integral in terms of building the literacy profile throughout the school.
- Raise the profile of the library internally through effective communication and 'marketing'.
- Manage events held in the library to encourage students in, such as \"Chiller/Christmas\" week, Chess Tuesday, quizzes etc.
- Develop and supervise skills of students who elect to access support in the library.
- Organise and take part in the Readathon and 'Back Buzz' reading programmes for Years 6 to 8.
- Support academic departments with resources and promotion for programmes such as 'Black History' and 'Science Week'.
- Act as an ambassador for the school when dealing with external parties.
- Continue to develop the tutor time reading program.
- Develop creative and effective channels for increasing the usage and relevance of the library offering e.g. book events, author events, reading for pleasure, international book week etc.
- Liaise and support the English Department with author events and transition activities.
- Support Enrichment in the Library i.e. Reading Café or Book Groups.
- Lead Library lessons when students are brought in by teachers - relevant to what they are studying.
- Lead Library Introduction lessons for new intake.
- Support the English Department by planning trips and events, both in and out of school, that promote pupil engagement and raise the profile of the subject.
- Liaise with academic departments to provide supporting resources to develop stretch and challenge opportunities.
- Run and promote library events that support whole school initiatives and cross-curricular events.
Skills & Experience
- Highly organised and methodical.
- Strong communication skills credible at all levels.
- Imaginative and creative in terms of promotion of the library offering.
- The ability to work unsupervised.
- A love of reading and literature.
- Knowledge of Library software.
- Previous experience in a similar role would be desirable.
- Recognised academic qualifications.
