Job description
The Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland (JABS) invites applications from suitably qualified individuals who wish to be considered for appointment to the First-tier Tribunal for Scotland, Social Security Chamber.
The Social Security Chamber currently deals with appeals in connection with decisions and determinations in terms of sections 46 and 61 of the Social Security (Scotland) Act 2018.
JABS is seeking to recruit up to 50 legal members to work in various locations across Scotland.
The posts are part-time and paid on a daily fee basis.
The legal member Daily Sitting Fee is £432.92. There is a yearly commitment of 10-30 days.
Please note that you will be not entitled to a pension in respect of your office, and you are not entitled to any gratuity, allowance or compensation when your period in office ends (whatever the reason).
Additionally within this role you will not have any entitlement to receive a guaranteed minimum amount of fees.
Eligibility
To be eligible for appointment you must:
- Have previous engagement in practice for a period of not less than 5 years as a solicitor or advocate in Scotland; and
- Subsequent engagement in any of the activities listed below:
(a) exercising judicial functions in any court or tribunal;
(b) practice or employment as a lawyer of any kind;
(c ) teaching or researching law at or for an educational institution.
Tribunal members are subject to the retirement provisions contained within the Judicial Pensions and Retirement Act 1993 meaning members of the Social Security Chamber are unable to continue working as members of the Chamber after the age of 75.
Interviews
Interviews for these appointments are planned to take place from June to September 2023.
Training:
If you are appointed you would be required to undertake training and support which is provided prior to you taking up the role.
Starting Date:
If successful, appointment will commence around October 2023 to allow training to take place in early 2024. You will not be asked to hear cases until April 2024.
