Job description

The Role

Where you fit in

Shell Trading and Supply has an integrated global portfolio of crude oil, refined products, natural gas, LNG, electrical power, chemical feedstocks and environmental products. Based in the UK, US, Canada, Singapore, The Netherlands, Japan, Bahamas, Brazil, Dubai and Russia, and with over 7000 employees, Shell Trading and Supply trades on average over 12 million barrels of crude and oil products and 5 million/boe in natural gas and power each day.

What’s the role?

The role is to provide legal support to the Trading & Supply (T&S) crude and products trading business based in London with coverage for the world outside of North America. In addition to the existing and significant global Crude and Products trading businesses which this role would primarily support, Shell Trading and Supply has recently established a Low Carbon Fuels (LCF) business, which intends to optimize (on a global basis) bionaptha, ethanol, biodiesel and HVO trading flows, developing new opportunities in feedstock supply, sustainable aviation fuel as well as routes to market (in transport) for biomethane. This new business is growing quickly and has tremendous growth aspirations aligned with Shell’s Powering Progress agenda.

What we need from you

  • Experience working within a physical commodity trading environment, preferably with exposure to crude or refined products trading, would be well regarded. In addition, given the integrated nature of the nascent LCF business and project pipeline, those with M&A and project development would also be well suited.

  • Understanding of the main legal areas relevant to international commodities trading and regulatory regimes.

  • Understanding of some of the main legal areas relevant to integrated project development and value chains, structured finance, credit security and insolvency and exchange trading of commodities.

  • Ability to draft and negotiate with appropriate understanding of the regulatory background and commercial intentions.

  • Strong influencing, negotiating and facilitation skills, including the ability to lead negotiations in transactions with multiple parties.

  • Experienced in international common law and/or civil law contracts.

  • Ability to work on multiple issues in parallel with an ability to prioritize.

  • Ability to develop and sustain relationships with clients at all levels and in a range of cultures.

  • Ability to understand and take account of business drivers and needs and balance with wider constraints.

  • Able to quickly identify and give clear exposition of a legal issue and to provide succinct, practical and accurate legal advice.

  • Attention to detail, proactive, pragmatic, autonomous and hands on.

  • Excellent command of English language, both spoken and written/drafting skills.

  • Strong academic background and capable of applying jurisprudence in real situations.

  • Ability to address issues creatively and sensitively and to build strong relationships across a range of organizations and internal stakeholders.

  • Law degree and professional legal qualification in a common law jurisdiction, with a PQE 5 – 8 years.

Company Description

Shell is an international energy company that aims to meet the world’s growing need for more and cleaner energy solutions in ways that are economically, environmentally, and socially responsible. It is one of the world’s largest independent energy companies, operating in more than 70 countries.

Shell has a global target to become a net zero emissions energy business by 2050. This means that Shell aims to be net zero on all emissions generated by its operations and the energy needed to power them. The company is working with customers, business, and governments to address emissions across different sectors.

In March 2022, Shell UK announced an ambition to invest between £20 to £25 billion in the UK energy system over the next decade, more than 75% of which is intended for low and zero-carbon products and services including offshore wind, hydrogen, and electric mobility. These investments, which are subject to board approval, aim to propel the UK closer to net zero whilst intending to stimulate economic growth and jobs.

Our people are our greatest asset, and our commitment to your career will see you thrive in a work environment that offers an industry-leading development programme. When your ideas travel, Shell will benefit, and innovation will thrive. Shell has a key role to play in helping meet the UK’s growing energy demand, whilst using innovative technologies to develop cleaner energy.
