Here at the Liverpool School of Tropical of Medicine (LSTM), we are going through a period of growth, and we are looking to expand our team of in-house legal experts.
In this newly created role, you will work closely with the Head of Legal to help shape the future and direction of the department, whilst providing broad legal support to LSTM’s academic and professional services teams, across the business.
You will also provide oversight to LSTM’S research contracts team and act as an escalation point and a referral point for non-research matters. You will be comfortable leading on contract details with partners, collaborators, service providers and consultants, on a range of commercial contracts both within the UK and globally.

We have a hybrid working style and the successful applicant would be expected to be based in Liverpool.
Your role will include, but not be limited to:
- Provide high quality and pragmatic general legal advice and support to all functions of LSTM, including (where necessary) overseas subsidiaries and projects.
- Managing a team of four research associates. Being the first point of escalation contact for the team to discuss matters with.
- Provide specialist legal support (ideally directly or through engagement with LSTM’s external lawyers where appropriate) in specialist legal areas such as HR/employment, construction, real estate, company law, charity law, GDPR/data protection, IP and IT.
- Draft commercial contract matters including using contract-law experience in negotiating, drafting and advising on various types of commercial contracts and the related issues.
Ideally, you will be a qualified solicitor working within private practice, in-house, charity, a public authority or an education institution. You will need to demonstrate substantive core experience in commercial contract law-related matters including experience in negotiating, drafting and advising on various types of commercial contracts and the related issues.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- Minimum qualified undergraduate degree level (or equivalent) in law (LLB) or other relevant undergraduate degree
- Completion of the Legal Practice Course, Bar Vocational Course or equivalent and qualified to practice as a Solicitor or equivalent in England and Wales
- Experience of working in a professional contract and/or general legal role.
- Experience of managing a team
- Experience of preparing, reviewing, and negotiating a range of contracts for internal and external review.
- Excellent knowledge, experience and understanding of developments in relevant legislation, practices and procedures
- Experience of working and investigating across a range of legal issues, and a range of corporate entities e.g. dealings between business and charitable/not for profit organisations.
- Experience of managing large and complex matters from commencement through to completion, on time and on budget.
- Outstanding writing skills, with the ability to write/prepare high quality papers, presentations, reports and briefings to senior audiences.
