Full Time Manchester, England 39592 - 54421 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

The Manchester Institute of Education

The UK’s first Faculty of Education was launched at the University of Manchester in 1914, and we have been championing the vulnerable and addressing educational challenges ever since. Manchester Institute of Education (MIE) currently has over 150 members of academic staff, and over 100 postgraduate research students. We offer range of successful postgraduate and undergraduate courses, delivered both face-to-face and at a distance, which recruit over 1,000 students per year. Our initial teacher education programmes are all rated outstanding, and we prepare over 500 new teachers for the classroom every year.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Lecturer in Education (T&R) post will provide an ideal entry-level or early-career position for a research-focussed scholar who is fully committed to students and teaching. You will be expected to contribute to and enhance MIE’s research-led teaching in Education, across a range of UG and PGT programmes, and to develop a research profile consistent with the UoM’s published expectations. In support of this, you will be inducted into a thriving and supportive academic environment, and assigned to one or more of our active RSGs. MIE has recently embarked on a programme of expansion, and the advertised post is on top of a recruitment cycle that began in summer 2021 and has since brought 15-20 new colleagues to the department on full-time, permanent contracts. We aim to provide all of the backing and mentorship needed for you to fulfil your professional potential in a warm and collegial environment.

If you have applied unsuccessfully for a previously advertised post at MIE, you are welcome to try again. We intend to hold interviews in April or May, and the successful candidate will join MIE on August 1st 2023 if possible.

As a Lecturer, your duties will be:

  • To be research-active in your specialist field at a level commensurate with your career point, as demonstrated by peer-reviewed research publications and sustained engagement with relevant research communities;
  • To establish a reputation as a promising researcher (and future research leader) in your field;
  • To actively seek to obtain internal and external research funding;
  • To enhance public understanding of your research and/or contribute to well-informed public debate;
  • To have involvement with the supervision, evaluation and examination of PGR students;
  • To contribute to MIE RSGs and other UoM networks;
  • To create, manage and lead on activities and initiatives that translate into beneficial activity or positive change in the wider community beyond academia, generating ‘impact’;
  • To design and deliver high-quality research-led teaching across MIE undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, as required;
  • To act as first point of email contact for students, and to support online communities of inquiry;
  • To challenge thinking, foster debate and develop the ability of students to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking;
  • To supervise dissertations for undergraduate and postgraduate degree level students;
  • To act as a personal tutor or academic adviser to MIE students;
  • To design and deliver classes in a range of formats, which may include lectures, seminars, tutorials, labs, and workshops, and to use online virtual learning environments for teaching and assessment as necessary;
  • To set and mark undergraduate and master’s level student assessments, including coursework and examinations as required, and to provide appropriate feedback to students in a timely and clear manner;
  • To contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate recruitment and admissions activities as required;
  • To contribute to the general management and administration of the programmes to which you are attached, and to take pastoral care of all students;
  • To work as an effective member of MIE, and engage in a collegial manner with both academic and professional support staff;
  • To make appropriate and creative use of UoM IT systems, including Blackboard and Turnitin;
  • To meet deadlines agreed with Programme Directors, course unit leaders, MIE’s Directors of Teaching and Learning Operations, the Head of Department and their deputies;
  • To undertake any other duties commensurate with your grade, as may reasonably be required of you.
