Job description

Message from Jon Melbourne, Chief Operating Officer

Here at University Hospitals of Leicester we want to provide future leaders the opportunity to grow and develop in an environment which is exciting, challenging, supportive and inclusive. We want leaders who are committed to working in the right way to drive improvements in care and to create an environment in which individuals and teams can excel.

We are firmly committed to being the best possible provider of healthcare and place to work in the NHS, and we are looking for leaders who can work with us on that journey.

Our Leadership and Management Training Scheme aims to provide you with the opportunities to develop as a leader, the experiences to help shape your career decisions, and the skills to progress your career.

Thank you for your interest in joining us on our journey.

Jon

Scheme details

This is a graduate-level trainee scheme. We are seeking driven leaders of the future with the potential to make a difference to our patients. We want to encourage everyone to apply and will be looking for candidates with a 2:2 degree in any subject or equivalent experience. Applications are welcome from internal UHL or external colleagues either from clinical or non-clinical backgrounds. A desire to drive innovation and change and a demonstrable commitment to the NHS are the key things we are looking for.

Starting in September 2023 the LMTS scheme lasts for 24 months. Throughout your placements you will develop skills such as project and financial management, planning and organisation of services, analysis of complex data to inform decision making, service and quality improvement, managing people and teams, leadership and change management.

Our placements are actual jobs which have been identified as requiring resource so you will be doing real work from day one with responsibility supported by a comprehensive learning programme. We offer a diverse experience of working as part of the operational management team.

The salary for the scheme is £29,833 per annum

** Please note the section titled further questions containing 3 competency-based questions on the application must be completed in order for your application to be considered**

UHL is a Trust with regional and national reach. It has an operating turnover in excess of £1.3 billion and it provides a wide range of general and specialist services across a diverse range of communities in Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland and beyond. Whilst we are a large Trust, it is essential that we ensure all of our communities, patients and colleagues receive a personal and positive experience when they interact with the Trust.

Our team is made up of more than 17,000 staff providing a range of services primarily for the one million residents of Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland. We work with partners at the University of Leicester and De Montfort University providing world-class teaching to nurture and develop the next generation of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, many of whom go on to spend their working lives with us.

Main duties of the job

What will the job roles entail?

  • Supporting managers in different teams to operationally manage and mobilise resources or undertaking projects to improve service delivery.
  • Developing capacity and demand plans to appropriately manage waiting lists and flow including reporting and measuring efficiency.
  • Supporting the achievement of national and local performance objectives
  • Working with clinical and non-clinical teams to ensure continuous service and efficiency improvements.
Why this scheme?

This scheme offers an opportunity to develop the skills and the confidence to make a real difference to our healthcare services - with the fundamental aim of improving patient care. It is designed to give you a range of experience so that you can learn, develop and move into more senior managerial posts following completion. Towards the end of your scheme you will be supported to apply for a permanent managerial role at the Trust and we have a good track record in retaining our trainees, ideally at University Hospitals of Leicester but many have been able to expand their careers in other NHS Trusts.

You will also work on a formal course of study leading to a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration (Level 7).

You will complete at least 3 placements (normally 8 months) in a real NHS role to allow you to embed yourself within an operational team and grow in your role, complete projects to support future job applications and expand your network.
