Job description
The earthworks/foundation role, as part of the LDR team, will involve a broad variety of responsibilities including, but not limited, to the following:
Provide specialist earthworks/foundation support and advice, as part of the LDR team, across the Design and Construction teams
Provide specialist earthworks/foundation support and advice to the LDR team
As part of a risk-based approach - participate in the focussed review of assets to evidence compliance through each stage of the asset lifecycle from detailed design, construction and handover
As part of a risk-based approach - participate in the high level review of assets from detailed design, construction and handover
Support the Designer and Contractor to identify and resolve ‘gaps’ in their processes, plans and procedures
Provide support and manage workload within the LDR team
Ensure smooth, timely completion and turnaround of Design and Construction Verification Certificates
Participate in signing of Design and Construction Verification Certificates
Support Design and Construction teams - often working to tight deadlines - across all parts of their works
Ensure processes, plan and procedures are adhered to by the Design and Construction teams
Understand the deliverables produced by Design and Construction teams, and how these provide evidence for compliance with the processes, plans and procedures
Liaise with HS2, Designers, Contractors, suppliers and third parties, as required, in all matters related to the delivery of works
Assist the Design and Construction teams in all matters related to delivery of their works
Work collaboratively to ensure a consistency of approach across all parts of Contractor and Designer works
Capture, and record, LDR engagement with the Design and Construction teams
Candidate Specification
Experience in working on large engineering and construction projects
Experience of design and/or construction across a range of geotechnical/foundation works
Educated to degree level
Membership of a relevant professional organisation
(i.e., ICE, APM, IStrucE)
Chartered Engineer/Geologist (or with equivalent/relevant experience)
Understanding of engineering processes on multidisciplinary design and build contracts
Experience of working with and applying the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015
Familiar with NEC contract framework and project controls processes
Good analytical, organisational and communication skills
Ability to prioritise and organise workload without supervision
Build successful relationships with others - within the LDR team, DJV and across other organisations (BBV, HS2 etc.) during a project’s lifecycle (design, construction and handover)
Proactive attitude, a willingness to engage and adapt, and apply previous skills/experience to new (potentially unfamiliar) challenges
Ability to understand and work in accordance with the applicable project procedures
Ability to test, challenge and develop project procedures
Familiar with common data environment principles
Working knowledge of MS Packages - Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Working knowledge of ProjectWise System, or willingness to learn
Appreciation of document control processes

Our Metro’s and Civil’s Tunnels team Are currently recruititng for a Lead Designer Representative to join the team on a Fixed Term basis in either our Croydon or Birmingham locations. The Lead Designer Representative (LDR) team is embedded within, working for, and representing Balfour Beatty Vinci (BBV on HS2 N1, N2) - whilst employed by the Mott MacDonald/Systra Design Joint Venture (DJV).
As part of the team of engineering professionals - the LDR - you will work with the Designer (BBV/DJV) and Contractor (BBV) to collaboratively discharge the Lead Designer duties.
These include a comprehensive list of assurance responsibilities covering all aspects of the Contractor’s design and construction activities.
The LDR involvement will span across all phases of the project lifecycle (from design, construction and finally handover back to HS2).
To discharge the Lead Designer duties - the LDR team will undertake a focused review for a limited number of ‘high risk’ assets (approximately 5% of all works), and a high level review for all other assets.
Earthworks/foundations is a key part of the infrastructure being delivered across N1, N2.
The specific role is to provide specialist earthworks/foundation knowledge, experience and support as part of the LDR team.
The role will involve engagement across BBV, DJV and their supply chains to ensure the works are managed, coordinated, integrated, and certified in accordance with HS2’s requirements.
The LDR’s assessment of the ‘high risk’ assets - as part of the focused review - will be used to gauge whether the processes, plans and procedures are working effectively.
The LDR will test and challenge, intervene and escalate as required to support consistency across the N1, N2 works.
