Legal Assistant/Law Clerk
PLEASE NOTE: This position is in the Town of Durham, postal code N0G 1R0. We are not located in the Region of Durham to the east of Toronto.
Durham, West Grey, law firm is seeking a reliable full-time law clerk to join our team. We practice in the areas of real estate, wills, estates, corporate and commercial, and civil litigation. We anticipate that this role will focus on real estate, but given the small size of our firm and broad scope of our practice, we are looking for a candidate willing and eager to learn and work in all areas that we cover.
We are a small and community-oriented law firm, and the successful candidate will enjoy a friendly and amenable work environment.
Responsibilities include:
- This is an in-person position at our Durham, West Grey, Ontario office
- Manage real estate purchase, sale, and mortgage files from opening through completion and reporting
- Providing litigation support, including diarizing deadlines, serving documents, preparing Affidavits of Service, preparing Affidavits of Documents, preparing other court documents and completing court forms, filing documents with the court and into CaseLines, communicating with court staff, and docketing time spent on litigation files
- Acting as assistant to senior Partner with respect to ongoing projects in all areas
- Assisting with other areas, including preparing incorporation documents and other corporate filings, closing documents for share and asset sales/purchases and corporate restructuring, drafting Wills and Powers of Attorney, administering Estates, and completing routine filing and clerical work
- Communicating with lawyers, colleagues, clients, lenders, real estate agents, court staff, and others, with a focus on building positive working relationships with all
- Must be able to work independently and take responsibility for one’s own files
- Experience as a real estate clerk an asset, and will be reflected in compensation
- Familiarity with Unity and LawyerDoneDeal an asset
Job Requirements:
- High school diploma required
- Further education as law clerk, in office administration, or in a related field is an asset
- Must be familiar with computers and computer software
- Able to quickly learn new software, such as ProLaw, Unity, WordPerfect, Microsoft Office, etc.
- Able to quickly learn to navigate websites and online services such as Teraview, OnCorp, the Attorney General’s database of court forms, etc.
- Excellent typist
- Must have excellent spelling and grammar
- Organized and reliable
- Able and willing to maintain confidentiality of client information
- Must be self-motivated and take initiative to fulfill responsibilities and assist the firm
- Must have own reliable form of transportation
- Must be articulate and able to provide excellent customer service
- Law firm experience an asset
- Vaccinated against COVID-19 (at least the original 2 shot series)
Job Details:
- Hours – Monday through Thursday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm with 1 hour lunch.
- Compensation – minimum $45,000 per year; dependant on experience
