The Wellcome Trust has made a significant investment supporting the Centres for Antimicrobial Optimisation Network (CAMO-Net); a global network for research and capacity strengthening on optimising antimicrobial use.
Applications for the Centre for Antimicrobial Optimisation Laboratory Manager are invited from outstanding applicants to join the team at Imperial College London. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on multi-disciplinary research projects, focused on optimising antimicrobial use and infection management, at the Centre for Antimicrobial Optimisation (CAMO), Imperial College. The post holder will support the CAMO Lab Manager and use their excellent technical and organisation skills to support CAMO research studies. These include the development of (i) rapid diagnostics to detect infections and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, and (ii) novel biosensors for monitoring and optimising antimicrobial levels.
Experience in processing clinical samples, microbiology, PCR and/or other amplification chemistries, and mass spectrometry is beneficial, however, training will be provided.
This exciting post will be based at Imperial College’s new CAMO laboratories (https://www.imperial.ac.uk/antimicrobial-optimisation-centre/) at Hammersmith and will be work with other members of the partner sites at Liverpool, South Africa, India and Uganda.
Duties and responsibilities
- Provide technical support and complete molecular assays (mostly PCR, qPCR, dPCR and LAMP), nucleic acid extractions, characterising and culturing microorganisms, and processing clinical samples
- Calibrate and validate quantitative and qualitative assays for a range of drug and non-drug analytes using different methodologies, including HPLC tandem mass spectrometry, lateral flow and novel approaches including biosensors
- Support other CAMO projects as required
- Purchase consumables and maintain stocks as required
- Support the CAMO Laboratory Manager with the day to day running of the CAMO laboratory, ensuring it fulfils health and safety requirements
- Maintain highly organised, full, accurate, complete and legible record records of experimental work.
- Collate, organise and process clinical samples and data in accordance with local and national guidance/policies
- To maintain accurate and complete records of clinical samplesthat adheres to data regulations
- Actively participate in the research programme of the Group and Unit including attending and participating at research meetings and seminars.
- Collaborate with other scientists within Imperial College, UK Health Security Agency and elsewhere in the UK or abroad, as appropriate and work with scientists, clinicians, technicians and students within the laboratories.
- To undertake any necessary training and/or development.
Essential requirements
- You will have a science degree or equivalent, with experience of working in a research setting and have laboratory management experience.
- You will be familiar with microbiology and molecular techniques.
- It is essential you have good knowledge of health and safety in a research Centre.
- You will be experienced in working in a multidisciplinary environment, with excellent inter-personal and communication skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication are essential, as well as the ability to manage workload independently, with discipline and regard for confidentiality and security at all times

This is a Part Time (17.5 hours per week) and Fixed Term post for 36 months based at the Hammersmith Campus (with occasional travel to other campuses when required)
