Reporting to the Design & Engineering Innovation Centre Manager and working within the Department’s Design & Engineering Innovation Centre, this role provides support across the portfolio of Design and Engineering courses at postgraduate and undergraduate level, as well as to PhD students and staff engaged in research and knowledge exchange activities.
You will have technical responsibility for all laboratory equipment, including mechanics of materials, fluids, thermodynamics & materials testing equipment in the Innovation Centre. You will also provide technical support for experimental-based undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD and staff research projects, as well as inspiring and motivating students about design and engineering.
You will have a higher education qualification in an engineering discipline and/or related industrial experience. You must also have experience in and understanding of engineering experimental techniques, maintenance of laboratory equipment and a sound understanding of Health and Safety Legislation in a laboratory environment. Skills in experimental rig making is essential and experience in manufacturing and machining including milling and turning is desirable. You should be willing to act as Radiation Protection Advisor & Laser Support Officer for the department, where training will be given. You must have the ability to work well with students and staff combined with a proactive and independent approach. Experience of experimental data collection techniques and technologies is desirable.
