Position Summary
The Visual Arts Studio and Lab Technician serves an integral role in the smooth functioning of the department's physical facilities necessary for student success. They assist in the ceramics, photography, and sculpture studios in materials preparation and student supervision. This person ensures equitable education access to students by providing open hours throughout the week, including evenings and weekends. In addition, they ensure students have access to materials they need for their projects, and provide assistance with processing student materials through kilns, chemicals, and printers.
40hr/week, 10-month contract

Job Duties and Responsibilities
Assist in the ceramics studio with material preparation and supervision. Specific duties for material preparation include mixing and processing clay for student use, moving, sorting, packing and unloading student works in the kilns in a timely manner throughout the semester. Also responsible to supervise and assist students during open lab hours where students can come in and work on their projects for homework. Open lab hours are subject to change and vary by student demand/need, but generally include at least one evening per week and most Saturdays during the Fall/Spring semesters.
Assist in the photography labs - both the darkroom and the digital photo lab. Specific duties include maintenance of chemicals in the darkroom including mixing and replenishing chemical trays and proper disposal of chemicals. Also responsible to supervise students during open lab hours where students come in and work on their projects for homework. This includes troubleshooting issues with printers, changing ink cartridges, and changing enlarger bulbs.
Assist in installing and taking down shows in the Cade Fine Arts gallery. This includes properly unpacking, moving, installing, and repacking artwork. In addition, this person will assist as needed with the time-based media equipment cage and 2D art studios in the Cade building.
Supervise open lab hours in the sculpture studio for students coming in to work on homework assignments. This includes ensuring the safe operation by students of heavy machinery. May also be asked to assist in material preparation as well as assisting Sculpture instructors on projects that require multiple technicians.
Required Qualifications:
Associate's degree or higher
Minimum of six months of relevant experience
Experience working in a ceramics, sculpture, and/or photography studio.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with students, faculty, staff & the public. Good organizational, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, several times per day. Ability to wear a P100 particulate respirator for several hours at a time.
Preferred Qualifications:
Studio arts degree, or similar, in ceramics, sculpture, and/or photography.
