You will be joining our Kernowflex (Bank) as cover for our security team, as such you will be one of our valued officers whose role will be to assist the Royal Cornwall Hospital provide excellent healthcare to our inpatients and outpatient while they are using our services.

During your assigned shifts - Your primary role will be to police our hospital entrances during night-time periods to ensure we maintain a secure hospital environment 24/7. You will also be available to provide support, help and guidance to our patients and visitors to ensure that their time with us is a safe and trouble-free experience. Working closely with medical and nursing staff you will be part of the team who will help them to enjoy their working experience by always being available to provide support and protection to them when they are called on to work with patients who become troublesome or demanding due to their medical condition. You will possess an approachable manner and be courteous and knowledgeable when communicating with hospital users. Decision making will be one of your strengths when called to attend and provide support with difficult situations which can either be intentional acts by volatile individuals or problems caused by clinically related challenging behavior. You will need to have excellent communication skills both verbal and written and be able to demonstrate a reasonable level of IT literacy.

As a Kernowflex (Bank) Security Officer, you will provide a wide range of duties which will require a customer focused approach. Predominantly your duties will be to police our hospital and to provide a timely response to support patients, visitors, members of the public and hospital staff across a broad range of issues. To support you in carrying out these duties each officer will be expected to successfully attend the Physical Intervention Training qualification course. You may also undertake the normal wide range of general security tasks which will include (but not be limited to) high profile guarding and patrol duties, key holding, locking and unlock procedures, responding to and managing incidents including potentially volatile situations, monitoring and operating CCTV. Your duties will require you to hold a current, clean full UK driving license and hold a current SIA license and/or be willing to work towards achieving a Healthcare Security Officer’s qualification. This post will also require a DBS check to an enhanced level. You will receive a full range of induction and training into the Trust and your work.

Our existing shift pattern is 07:00 to 19:00hrs or 19:00hrs to 07:00hrs but as a Kernowflex (Bank) Security Officer you may also be offered part shifts throughout this shift pattern

To undertake to assist the existing security operations required to support a safe and secure environment at The Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust’s hospital site and grounds and to provide protection for staff, patients, visitors and users. To use their skills and training to manage a variety of security related incidents while conducting him/herself in a firm but courteous manner at all times.
1. To police the main hospital entrances and areas of the Royal Cornwall Hospital site as appropriate and as directed by the Head of Security, and in accordance with security procedures.
2. To provide a physical security presence and carry out routine checks on persons entering the hospital to prevent and deter unauthorised access to the hospital.
3. To maintain a safe and secure area to the immediate external entrance area to deter unauthorised and unacceptable activities from occurring.
4. To help to prevent, deter and detect incidents of theft or criminal damage, liaising with the Police as necessary and to take steps which may lead to apprehension of the person/s responsible.
5. To secure premises found insecure and set and de-activate intruder alarms as required. In the event of any alarm being activated, to immediately investigate and liaise with the police where necessary and as required in accordance with set procedures.
6. To liaise with the Estates helpdesk on issues relating to security maintenance topics such as failed site lighting, damage, locks, access control systems etc. on NHS Trust property.
7. To assist in preventing acts of violence or disorderly conduct on NHS Trust property and detain offenders using minimal force for hand-over to the police.
8. To assist medical and nursing staff in the safe restraint or detention of patients, while appropriate assessments are undertaken.
9. To respond to intruder, lift and Fire alarms as trained while monitoring the incident until the arrival of a senior member of staff or emergency service officer.
10. In accordance with Trust procedures assist in searching Trust property and grounds for vulnerable patients absent from ward areas.
11. To remove trespassers and unauthorised persons from hospital property in accordance with the policy and guidelines.
12. To ensure that all incidents that occur during a duty shift are accurately recorded with the appropriate amount of detail and evidence required to support further investigation or action.
13. To deal with incidents relating to lost and found property and to handle lost and found property in accordance with the Trust’s policies and procedures
14. To operate and monitor Closed Circuit Television and associated equipment as required in accordance with the procedure.
15. To provide a key holding service for Departments as instructed by the Head of Security.
16. To carry out duties as specified in Trust procedures during Major Incident or Child Abduction Alerts - carrying out searches, cordoning areas and securing entrances as necessary.
17. To carry out any other reasonable duties relating to security at the discretion of the Head of Security.
18. To undertake appropriate training for Health and Safety at Work; industrial accident prevention; fire prevention; first aid; and control, restraint and breakaway techniques and to undertake additional training determined by the needs of the Department and/or legislation.
19. To operate and use equipment and machinery in accordance with the needs of the Department.
20. To adhere to all Trust Policies and Procedures
