Job description
Of Lost Time is seeking a Junior Historical Editor to join its team. This is an exciting entry-level opportunity for a strong researcher and writer with a keen interest in history.
Of Lost Time is an innovative publishing unit dedicated to bringing to light the stories hidden in historical correspondence. We are looking for someone to research and assist writing the next books in our Letters for the Ages series; the historical themes of these books are broad, covering topics such as the history of science, espionage, music, and the history of London, and will be explored through historical letters.
The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting high quality historical research, writing creative copy, and editing manuscripts for print. Working alongside the senior editor, the successful candidate will work across several projects at once and will have plenty of opportunities to utilise a range of editorial skills, making this the ideal role for a strong multitasker who enjoys variety in their work.
The ideal candidate will have a proven interest in history – can be academic, professional, or personal – and will demonstrate an interest in uncovering stories and first-hand accounts hidden in historical correspondence.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Conducting thorough and considerate historical research, using archives, books, the internet, and libraries to find historical letters
- Transcribing letters
- Writing 200-400 word biographical and contextual ‘introductions’ to pair with each letter
- Proofreading manuscripts
- Collaborating with the managing director to develop new ideas for driving the projects forward
Who we are looking for
- A candidate with strong historical interests and a background in historical research (academic or professional)
- An enthusiastic writer who can adapt their narrative voice to various writing styles and genres
- A candidate with a keen eye for detail who can proofread carefully and is a thorough factchecker
- A confident communicator who is able to present their work to other team members and debate the historical value of source material
- A decisive individual who can use their initiative to conduct research independently and use critical thinking to find the best content for our books
- A confident collaborator who can work well in a small team
- Someone who can adapt to flexible deadlines and changing priorities
- Someone who is creative and enjoys working on multiple projects at once
Candidates are invited to apply by answering the qualifying questions and enclosing a copy of a CV and cover letter.
