Junior Geospatial Data Analyst

Location: This role will be based at the BGS headquarters in Keyworth, Nottingham
Grade: UKRI Pay Band C
Salary: salary range is £25,702 to £27,938 (depending on qualifications and experience)
Hours: Full-time – 37 hours a week (some flexible working options may be available including a small amount of remote working in line with BGS policy)

About the role
An exciting Junior Geospatial Data Analyst vacancy has arisen within the BGS Informatics, digital data products team, based at our headquarters in Keyworth, Nottingham. In this role, the postholder will assist with a range of interdisciplinary projects across the BGS Informatics and Science areas, supporting a wider geospatial analytics team primarily through the technical delivery of geospatial scripts and procedures.
In addition to the execution of existing workflows (such as for product development, and for data management, analysis, and sign-off tasks), the role will provide good opportunities for the development of new analytical and processing workflows and procedures.
Furthermore, the postholder will assist towards wider digital data products activities, which may include generating and appraising novel applications for BGS geo-data, internal and external collaborator engagement, evaluating and integrating 3rd party datasets, and assisting with the quality assurance process of science reviews, user-guides, and data methodologies prior to release.
About you
We are looking for experience of using GIS software for map-based data management and visualisation activities, plus be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the techniques, processes and tools related to the geospatial data analysis field. Strong communication, time-management and task prioritisation skills are required, alongside an ability to work effectively within a hybrid team environment.
We are looking for applicant with a relevant degree (environmental sciences/spatial data) plus post-graduate or equivalent work experience, in a subject area using GIS software and related programmes and scripts for data management, manipulation, analysis and visualisation.
In addition, it would be desirable for applicants to evidence experience and an interest in working with terrain-based datasets for geological analysis, mapping and geohazard product development.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) is an applied geoscience research centre that belongs to UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and is affiliated to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). It is a world leading geological survey whose core mission is to advise government of science related to the subsurface and to undertake applied research to solve earth and environmental issues, both in the UK and globally. It is funded directly by UKRI, as well as through research grants and private sector contracts.
