Job description
Role: Junior Electrical Engineer
Location: Cambridge
Our Client is a leader in bespoke special purpose machines and the Junior Electrical Engineer will work with mechanical engineers, control engineers and the Electrical Engineering Manager on projects to support the design, build and commissioning of equipment for clients.
The work is spread over mechanical, electrical and control engineering while the types of machines vary across applications and industries.
As the Junior Electrical Engineer, you will be exposed to all aspects of Electrical Design and build for Special Purpose Machines; you will be supported in your work and development while at the same time you will be expected to show excellent initiative and learn quickly.
All engineers have a high interest in automation, product handling and special purpose machinery, and, in general, thoroughly enjoy engineering.
This position will ideally suit an engineer who has the ability to design electrical systems with, preferably, a good knowledge of Solidworks Electrical. An understanding of mechanical engineering, automation and PLC programming is desirable; as is a positive attitude, a flexible approach to problem-solving and the ability to communicate at all levels.
The role is likely to involve some travel in the UK (and maybe overseas).
Equipment is sold into many high-tech industries such as petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, packaging, automotive, medical, printing and nuclear fuels. The client base ranges from universities and early-stage businesses to blue-chip companies, including such major firms as Johnson Matthey, Pfizer, Astra-Zeneca, and many more.
Much of the equipment is customised solutions, and client requirements vary from research and development projects to complete production equipment. Applications include turnkey production cells, automated test equipment, automated assembly, automated materials handling, labelling and packaging services. The machines comprise technologies such as PLCs, robots, vision systems, pick and place modules, hydraulics, pneumatic and servo control.
Project values start from a few thousand pounds for a concept study rising to over a million pounds for fully automated production cells.
Key activities of the roles:
- Working closely with the Senior Engineers and the electrical team on a variety of projects
- Liaising with others in the design team, other departments, clients and contractors
- Reading and understanding design specifications and electrical schematics

- Commissioning and Acceptance Testing of the final product or system
- Researching suitable solutions and estimating costs and timescales
- Understanding and working to UKCA, CE, UL and CSA standards
- Preparing product documentation such as BOM’s, IO lists, manuals and reports
As a right candidate, you will have:
- A degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualification in an engineering field
- An interest in automation, product handling, or special purpose machinery in an industrial manufacturing environment
- A good knowledge of Solidworks Electrical or similar
- A structured and organised approach to workload
- A very good understanding of electrical control systems
