We’re now working in a hybrid way, with colleagues dividing their time between home/remote working and the office. You can find out more about our hybrid working policy at colleagues.coop.co.uk/hybrid-working-policy

We’re looking for a junior data scientist to help develop data science techniques that’ll enable colleagues to make quicker, more intelligent business decisions at scale. Data sits right at the heart of Co-op, and the wide range of services that we offer provides us with lots of information about our business, members, and customers.

In this role, you’ll use lots of different types of data in complex, long-term projects – supported by other members of the Data Science team. You’ll be developing valuable products that our leaders can use to make a real difference to Co-op and our members. If you’ve got the skills and passion that we’re looking for, we can offer you the opportunity to make a huge impact in a business that always puts people at the heart of its strategy.

What you’ll do

  • develop sustainable data products that drive value to the business, using innovative Databricks and Azure Cloud Technology
  • source, prepare, and analyse large tables of data
  • use a range of statistical and machine learning techniques like regression, clustering, decision trees, and forecasting
  • translate complex business logic and strategic decision-making into code
  • drive innovation and explore ways in which we can better utilise Co-op data
  • influence a variety of internal partner, promoting and demonstrating the value of data
  • build relationships and work closely and collaboratively with the wider data teams

This role would suit people who have

  • a Master’s / PhD in Data Science would be beneficial, although a quality Bachelor’s / Master’s / PhD in a highly numerate subject (e.g., Maths, Sciences, Computing, Engineering), alongside some exposure to data science, is a suitable alternative
  • the ability to write and develop code (using SQL, Python, or R)
  • an inquisitive mind, able to take questions or requirements and use data to provide insight and recommendations
  • strong numerical and statistical skills
  • excellent communication skills, with an ability to build meaningful relationships (you’ll engage frequently with key partners for requirement gathering, presenting, and feedback)

Why Co-op?

Here you’ll do work that matters. We’re a commercial organisation with a purpose beyond profit, and you’ll have an opportunity to help us build a stronger Co-op and stronger communities, You’ll also get a package that includes…

  • a competitive salary
  • 28 days holiday (rising to 32 in line with service)
  • coaching, training, and support to help you develop
  • pension with up to 10% employer contributions
  • annual incentive scheme
  • 30% off Co-op branded products in our food stores (increased from 20% to support colleagues during the cost-of-living crisis until April 2023)
  • 10% off all other brands in our food stores (increases to 20% on the Friday and Saturday after payday)
  • Wagestream – a money management app that gives you access to a percentage of your pay as you earn it
  • YuLife – an app that rewards you for exercising with discounts and vouchers for many of the UK’s biggest brands

Building an inclusive work environment

We’re actively building diverse teams and we welcome applications from everyone. We want to build inclusive work environments, where our colleagues have equal opportunities to reach their full potential. We celebrate our differences, and recognise the importance of our teams reflecting the communities they serve.

If you have a disability, we can make reasonable adjustments to our recruitment process according to your needs. We're also part of the Disability Confident scheme, meaning we'll always offer an interview to disabled candidates who apply through the scheme if they meet the minimum criteria for a job.

We'll ask whether you’d like to be considered under the Disability Confident scheme when you apply.
