Summary
We are looking for an Junior Data Assistant to join our growing Product Stewardship team.
As a member of the Product Stewardship team, you will be supporting our consultants in their daily work of creating and maintaining datasets of information on chemical substances and regulations. Our work involves extracting data from websites and documents, and processing this information using Excel / Google Sheets and a variety of in-house software tools and Excel-based macros.
The core of your role would be to use appropriate methods with spreadsheet software, data-handling scripts/macros, and existing in-house tools to make this extraction and transformation happen, all the while being on the lookout for ways of automating and improving the process.
As this role grows, we expect the work to branch out into revisiting the data we currently hold and helping bring it up to current standards of detail. There would also be plenty of opportunity for a successful candidate to demonstrate their analytical skills and technical know-how by assisting others in the team with the data-handling challenges that they face.
Role and Responsibilities
Core of the role
- Data extraction from diverse sources - e.g.: PDFs, Word Documents, web pages, external databases.
- Transformation and cleansing of data to established formats and standards.
- Designing repeatable automated methods to increase speed and accuracy.
Other tasks
- Designing strategies for extracting data from problematic sources.
- Assisting other personnel with data manipulation tasks.
- Designing reusable tools and methods to assist data management.
Profile and Qualifications
Essential qualities and skills:
- Demonstrable experience with advanced data processing methods in Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets
- Experience with spreadsheet macro languages Visual Basic and/or Google Apps Script
- Basic understanding of HTML and web architecture
- Logical and analytical skills, and an instinct for solving problems
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to work to detailed specifications with a questioning attitude
- Comfortable researching topics and methods outside of your current areas of knowledge
- Good self-discipline, being able to self-start and work independently
- Approachability and a willingness to provide support
- A Grade 4/C in Maths and English GCSE or equivalent
Desirable qualities, skills, and qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree or A-level qualification in a STEM field
- Experience with databases and SQL
- Familiarity with web scraping
- Experience with programming languages: Python; Javascript
- Proven written and verbal communication skills
