Job description
BBC Radio Derby is an award-winning station with a reputation for lively, personality-led programmes and a commitment to distinctive journalism. We are looking for a talented and experienced producer to set up and output our weekday afternoon show hosted by Sally Pepper. It’s a successful, entertaining programme which can switch quickly from hard news to light entertainment. It’s the home of Make a Difference, our daily pub quiz and entertainment news summary ‘Trending’. We need someone who’s energetic, creative, resourceful, full of ideas and engrossed in the daily news agenda both locally and nationally.
Main ResponsibilitiesWorking closely with the News Editor and the Executive Editor, you will help shape the afternoon show, making sure we’re talking about the things our listeners in Derbyshire and East Staffordshire care about, while keeping them entertained too. You will often work alone as well as part of a team, and will be expected to be confident in making editorial decisions on stories, writing incisive radio scripts, and maximising the use of audio to give the programme pace and variety.
Are you the right candidate? You will have significant experience in broadcast journalism and radio production.
You’ll work closely with producers, reporters and presenters and have an impressive understanding of daily news journalism in our patch.
You’ll know the sorts of stories and creative treatments that will interest and engage our audience.
We’d expect you to have a clear vision of how to translate stories into lively radio, and demonstrate this daily.
You’ll have great personal skills as a negotiator, diplomat and influencer, and the ability to integrate into our team and draw effectively on the BBC’s wide range of resources.
You must be able to think up creative and original treatments for stories and present ideas for original journalism.
You’ll have significant expertise in crafting engaging and creative short packages. In addition, you will need a good understanding of the BBC Radio Derby audience, and be able to think of ways to reach new and underserved audiences.
You’ll be fully immersed in the BBC’s editorial guidelines and media law, so you know how to mitigate the risks of putting out a live radio programme. You’ll work with colleagues to make sure your stories deliver to digital audiences.
We want a person who is bursting with ideas and creative treatments, someone who is passionate about our area and making great radio.
