The Specialist Hub sits within World Service Languages Content Hub and comprises a team of reporters and producers who make in-depth, investigative, exploratory journalism that contextualises the themes and issues behind news stories and presents them in exciting ways for the audience to interact with. The team creates content around population, cyber-security, the environment, gender and identity, and religion.
The ideal candidate will have a strong track record of in-depth original journalism including in English, and an excellent understanding of Languages underserved audiences.
They will also have a solid editorial background in current affairs, news or visual and data journalism. The journalist will be expected to work across the specialisms within the team alongside our reporters, as well as being comfortable working independently on their own story ideas. The ability to both self-shoot and edit short, medium and long-form videos for digital audiences is essential.
Main Responsibilities- Strong record of in-depth storytelling for a digital audience, including long-form video experience.
- Excellent filming and editing skills. Knowledge of Languages’ digital delivery tools such as Stitch is essential. Colour grading and After Effects skills also desirable.
- Experience of planning and delivering international shoots – both in-person and remotely.
- Proven ability to work on original journalism for underserved audiences across a range of specialisms, and to write texts in English to the highest standard.
- Excellent understanding of WS Languages audiences and their needs across several global regions.
- In-depth knowledge of the news agenda; ability to spot an interesting, shareable story - and generate eye-catching headlines and content to go with it.
- Ability to find interesting, alternative angles on established / on-going stories that dominate the news agenda.
- Ability to work with and communicate effectively across numerous departments.
- Demonstrable experience of working with a variety of stakeholders and enabling the adoption of new digital products and type of content.
- Significant recent experience as a journalist, with a good knowledge of production techniques
- Demonstrates sound editorial and policy decisions based upon a clear understanding of the BBC’s distinctive news agenda, the requirements of news and current affairs coverage, the programme departments and the audience
- Ability to use technology as required, in order to gather material for broadcast.
- Understands how a team works effectively and adopts the most appropriate role
- Able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people
- Demonstrates a commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understands how individual differences can benefit the BBC
- Effective planning and organising skills, ability to concentrate on several areas of work at one time, prioritising, delivering consistently to deadlines and reacting positively to changes and conflicting priorities
- Ability to write creatively in an engaging manner, adapt, produce and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of media suitable for multimedia output
- The flexibility and adaptability to sustain performance, particularly under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities and circumstances
- An understanding of Health & Safety procedures and how it applies to broadcasting
