We have an exciting opportunity in the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), and whilst we are the University of Sheffield, this is for our department based in Blackburn in the Northwest of England! We are looking for someone with a passion for enterprise level IT Support. You will be looking to use your problem-solving skills and customer facing support experience to make an impact on research in the manufacturing industry. We specialise in carrying out world-leading research into advanced machining, manufacturing and materials, which is of practical use to industry. You will join the IT team in our large, growing and diverse academic department, working across all parts of the AMRC Group. You will further strengthen our strong international research profile and our reputation for novel research and manufacturing support.
In this varied and dynamic role, you will be supporting general day-to-day IT activities to providing more specialist IT expertise to sophisticated research projects. This could include involving segregated traditional and 5g networks, high performance computing, virtualisation and storage. You will be part of the wider Advanced Manufacturing Group (AMG) IT team based in Rotherham, but will be the primary IT Lead on site at AMRC North West in Blackburn.
This role offers you the opportunity to support and engage with engineering project staff across a wide range of disciplines by ensuring a smooth delivery of IT support and customer focused service.
You will:
- Have a good honours degree in Computer Science or Information Systems or proven equivalent experience.
- Experience of leading an effective and efficient IT support service dealing with a range of issues from the sophisticated to the very simple.
- Networking experience (ideally with cisco, juniper or FS) including; switches, firewalls, cabling, routers, wireless access points, voip.
- Experience advising on technical projects and providing specialist advice to enable both IT, business and research decisions.
- Problem solving skills with the ability to analyse and tackle problems with an appreciation of longer-term implications.
About the Team
You will work within the AMRC North West facility and will report to the AMRC IT Infrastructure Manager. You will also be encouraged to work closely and collaboratively with the Directors of the AMRC North West and liaise with the University of Sheffield IT Services department for provision of networking, such as tailored shop floor connectivity, and telephone services in addition to university-provided services.
