The Department of Biomedical Engineering is an internationally leading provider of undergraduate training and education within the fields of rehabilitation technologies (including hosting the National Centre for Prosthetics and Orthotics), medical devices, and cell/tissue engineering. The Department provides undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development (CPD) programmes to biomedical engineers, prosthetists and orthotists, and related healthcare professionals. BME is one of eight academic departments in the Faculty of Engineering which is one of the largest and most successful engineering faculties in the UK and the largest in Scotland.

You will play an essential role in the planning, installations and maintenance of a wide range of IT equipment and software applications to ensure that these effectively support our teaching, research and administrative activities as well as providing advice/frontline IT support for staff and students that includes assistance on the use of University central systems and supporting staff that are working remotely. You will lead a small departmental committee focusing on IT needs in the department and cross-cutting impact on, e.g. creation of new databases, systems, data protection. You will also assist the Department to develop and utilise digital resources and equipment for online and hybrid delivery.

You will be educated to a minimum of HNC level or equivalent professional qualifications (e.g. Microsoft Certification), or have other comparable experience. We are looking for individuals who have a thorough grasp of the fundamentals of Mac and PC hardware, networking and operating systems and experience of Microsoft Windows installation and configuration, and the use of applications including Microsoft Office. You will use your interpersonal skills to engage effectively with our community of staff and students and have an ability to convey technical subjects to non-technical audiences. You will also employ a logical, analytical and creative approach to solving problems in your provision of frontline support.


Given the nature of research and clinical work in the Department, you will be required to handle sensitive data, such as health records, and to receive related training and certification if required including undergoing Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) checks
