Rogue Sun is a team of digital dreamers based in leafy Guildford, UK currently seeking an Experienced Senior or Lead Generalist Programmer to join our growing team.

Rogue Sun has been in business since 2016 when it was founded by a trio of developers who first met while working on the Fable Franchise at the historic Lionhead Studios. Rogue Sun’s activities range from working on award winning original IPs directly with first parties (Meta / Sony), working with prominent 3rd party publishers and collaborating with select partner studios on further developing their IP.

Rogue Sun is looking for an experienced Programmer who can play a lead role with our team and projects. The right person for this role will already be in a Senior with Lead ambitions or already in a Lead position within a PC, console, or VR games development environment.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with Unity engine’s various systems with a focus on Gameplay, Physics and AI, but also hold a solid understanding of UI, graphics, performance, and multiplatform development. They will also have experience managing and mentoring less senior members, reviewing their work and collaborating to champion growth and excellence.

You’d be working as part of a small, tightly knit multidisciplinary team of which you’d be the main port of call when it comes to all things engineering. As part of working in a small studio, your role will require an element of balancing your own workload alongside the needs of your team. You’d be working directly alongside the Creative Director and Executive Producer to identify the project’s needs with regards to engineering and to map them out against the project timeline. Our current project is a narrative / puzzle game so a passion for the genre would be a big bonus.

What you will do:

  • Work closely with the Creative leadership to understand the features, mechanics and tools required to facilitate the intended experience and how to translate them to engineering tasks

  • Work closely with production and the creative leadership to help build, maintain and champion the project roadmap, plan out the engineering work it implies and to communicate it to other members of the engineering team

  • Manage and support our close-knit team of programmers with their day-to-day tasks and needs as well as cultivate their overall growth and wellbeing

  • Take technical ownership of major game systems from concept to completion and work with other coders as well as other disciplines to iterate them to a high standard

  • Work alongside content creators to identify tools and processes that will speed up, automate and optimise the content creation process

  • Take technical ownership of any systems relating to multiplatform development like build systems and continuous deployment / integration pipelines

  • Architect, clearly communicate and document (in code and wikis) the technical design of the features, mechanics, tools and processes you build so other engineers can easily understand and build upon your work.

What you will need:

  • Demonstrable expertise in C# Unity coding

  • 5+ years of industry experience / ideally 2+ released titles on multiple platforms

  • An understanding and passion for clean code architecture, design patterns, extensible, robust, well documented code

  • A strong understanding of performance, optimisation and best practices for developing games for multiple platforms.

  • Ability to own the development of substantial systems from conception to completion.

  • Ability to quickly become productive whilst working with pre existing legacy codebases

  • Ability to balance the needs of managing a small team with the pressure of progressing your own workload and objectives

  • A supportive mentality, proactive attitude and eagerness to jump in and troubleshoot technical problems and suggest possible approaches to unknown areas of development

  • An attention to detail and a desire to maintain clean and elegant workflows. Excellent documentation skills with a demonstrable ability to clearly convey ideas both verbally and via documentation.

  • A self-motivated approach to work, a desire to have large amounts of ownership and input into the project, ability and agility to work in a fast paced “startup” environment (happy with wearing multiple hats)

  • Happy to work autonomously / assume big areas of responsibility / manage own schedule.

Bonus points for:

  • Examples of past work demonstrating technical expertise with the Unity game engine

  • Examples of any self-developed small / experimental / learning games

  • Examples of past work demonstrating general coding proficiency (e.g. other engines / coding languages)

  • Experience with profiling and optimisation

  • Experience with CI/CD / DevOps (gitlab, teamcity, jenkins)

  • Experience with multiplatform development and working with platform SDKs (console, pc, mobile, VR)

  • Happy to work autonomously / assume big areas of responsibility / manage own schedule.

If you think this sounds a lot like you, we can’t wait to hear from you at [email protected]!

Please note, for applicants progressing to the final stage of the application process, we may require you to do a programming test.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive Remuneration

  • Flexible Working

  • 25 Days holiday as standard

  • Company shared books / games library

  • Access to ½ price Cinema Tickets, up to 5% off at supermarkets and many other discounts at high-street and online brands

As a growing company and team, we are always looking to expand the benefits we offer! Join us and we’d be glad to hear your suggestions.
