Position Overview
The Center for Remote Sensing and Integrated Systems (CReSIS) computing environment includes a petabyte scale SAN, high performance computing cluster, regular office IT, networking, and remote assistance for field workers. CReSIS, in collaboration with KU Information Technology and the KU Center for Research Computing, controls all data movement from the user’s desktop to the network devices to the servers and to the storage.
Job Description
30% - Maintain project resources: Provide computer support for a very dynamic and diversified research and development facility. With help from CReSIS management, KU CRC, and KU IT:
20% - Support End-Users: Respond to helpdesk tickets from staff in a timely manner. Will manage installation, configuration, and management of computer hardware/software/networks. Protocols to be supported may include DNS, NTP, Web, FTP, NFS, and Samba.
15% - Assist in Supervising the CReSIS IT team: The IT team typically consists of 2-3 students who support the daily operations of the CReSIS computing and networking facilities including coordinating responses to automated notification of equipment failures.
10% - Assist in System Architecting: Integrate needed resources in already existing complex infrastructure. Assist in the design and implementation of new technologies to support CReSIS research activities as needed.
10% - Assist in Implementation: Ability to assist in the configuration of acquired systems beyond the vendor delivered configuration to meet CReSIS needs. This often may involve the development of custom software and solutions designed in house.
5% - Assist in Procurement: Meet with vendors to review new technology to solve the problem at hand. Meet with other KU IT centers if the project spans the campus. Negotiate price with vendors to find the best possible solution.
5% - Interact with KU Facility Services and Computer Center Most situations are concerning network access and new equipment installations. Meet with KU IT as needed to support CReSIS needs.
5% - Perform other duties as assigned

- Ensure security compliance across all devices from network to servers.

Position Requirements
This position is required to work on-site.
Required Qualifications
Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experience in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in resume, and (3) information provided from professional references:
- High School Diploma/ GED and four years of relevant professional experience or an Associate’s degree and two years of relevant professional experience or a Bachelor’s degree
- One or more years of experience with Microsoft Windows desktops and servers, Linux desktops and servers, and IP based networks
- One or more years of experience writing complex system automation scripts to include bash, PowerShell, and Python.
- Experience managing Windows and Linux clients and servers with Microsoft Active Directory and related technologies (Microsoft Configuration Manager, Group Policy, etc)
- Experience using PXE boot imaging and Ansible playbooks to manage Linux clients
- Excellent communication skills. Written communication skills will be evaluated based on quality of application materials
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering or related field.
- Experience setting up and managing network monitoring tools such as Zenoss, OpenNMS, or LibreNMS.
- Experience running LAMP stack servers
- Experience managing a software development environment including virtual machines, git source control, and issue tracking
- Experience configuring and managing Dell OS9, Dell OS10, Cisco, FS, and/or IBM switches
- Experience with enterprise scale file serving with NFS and Samba
- One or more years or experience with Linux client virtualization with VirtualBox and ProxMox
- Experience with Bacula open-source incremental backups to an LTO tape library
- Experience administrating a Quantum StorNext clustered file system
- Experience managing the Linux based Slurm scheduler
- Experience with SSL certificate management on Linux servers
- Experience managing MacOS and iOS devices with Jamf
- Experience with team leadership and management of small groups
- Experience managing a budget, financial planning, and forecasting
