Job description
The Investment Research team’s purpose is to deliver high quality research to support the decision-making process of the Investment Committee. The team is responsible for developing a House View of the global macroeconomic environment that in turn informs portfolio positioning and investment selection. The objective of the Investment Research team is to support the Investment Committee in achieving competitive performance of our discretionary portfolios over the long-term.
The Junior Investment Research Analyst will contribute to the “House View” and decision-making process of the Investment Committee by leading and supporting macroeconomic, asset class and investment security research.
Key Responsibilities
We are looking for someone to work proactively in a close knit investment researcher team to improve and evolve our investment strategy over time.
Research:
- Support the development of the research team at Arbuthnot Latham in terms of process refinement over time. An understanding of investment issues and wider performance drivers.
- Analyse macroeconomic and market developments in order to form views for portfolio positioning.
- Regularly read and consider news flow and research from third party sources, including financial media, investment bank research, asset managers and macro research specialists.
- Analyse investment trends, economic data points, and review investment commentary to generate views on asset classes, sectors and securities with a view to express recommendations that will assist in tactical asset allocation decisions.
- Assist with the development of automated datasets in order to build efficiencies within our process.
- Quantitatively and qualitatively review long-only and alternative funds, ETFs for inclusion within investment portfolios. Originate investment ideas through primary research and develop into investable opportunities.
- Contribute to the “House View”, which lays out the team’s outlook for markets and informs decision making as it relates to asset allocation, style bias and investment selection.
- Participation in adhoc projects as determined by the Senior Research Analyst.
- Lead and support investment research across asset classes assisting colleagues where required.
- As a non-voting member of the Investment Committee, play an active role in debating investment positioning / changes and participating in decisions that form the House View and lead to the selection of investments.
- Completion of internal fund due diligence questionnaires and ongoing oversight of funds to confirm their continued inclusion in portfolios.
- Enjoy working with a close knit team looking to achieve strong performance for the client of the bank and third parties.
Portfolio Risk & Analytics
- Collaborate with the Portfolio Risk and Analytics Manager to assist with the effective management of model portfolios.
- Contribute to research papers and articles for both internal and external use.
- Support the growth in new business and client retention through appropriate support to the Distribution team and client communications.
- Support the Investment Writer, providing content in relation to written content for internal and external stakeholders.

- We are looking for a candidate with demonstrable interest in investment research and any experience in the likes of investment management or investment strategy role which includes experience in macro analysis, idea generation, quantitative analysis, due diligence and investment selection, would be advantageous
- Experience of working within a multi-asset environment and a rounded knowledge of multi asset class preferred.
- Sound knowledge of modern portfolio theory and the impact of various risks in portfolio construction and monitoring.
- Some experience / knowledge of HNW private client portfolio management is a plus but not a requirement.
- Experience building and maintaining databases
- Inquisitive nature to understand the cause and effect interactions with the macro and markets
- A desire to build knowledge and expertise
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong organisational and administration skills.
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills, with a key focus on excel.
- Proficiency with Bloomberg, FactSet and Morningstar preferred.
- Programming knowledge/experience would be looked upon favourably.
