The Role:
An Investment analyst is sought to join the Investment team. This role would suit a recent graduate or an individual in the early stages of their career in investment management. Reporting to the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) the Investment Analyst will have a significant role to play in the Investment team in its management of the Canopius investment portfolio (currently $3bn AUM but expected to grow in line with management plan over coming years).
This is a front office investment role and will overlap with many aspects of the management of the outsourced investment infrastructure, including; the development of an appropriate investment risk appetite, investment strategy and asset allocation, the efficient combination of outsourced investment managers and the development of tactical positioning, including using derivative based futures and option strategies. Additionally, the role will encompass various operational activities vital to the efficient running of Canopius’ portfolio.
The position will also interact with other departments in Finance, including Investment Accounting, Treasury, Capital Management, wider Finance functions (including Business Planning, Expenses and Group Accounting), Actuarial and Risk departments.
The role requires a desire to develop investment knowledge, good quantitative modelling skills, operational competence and experience of working to tight deadlines.
The individual will work closely with the CIO and within the investment team to develop and manage the investment infrastructure, so as to enhance investment returns and company profitability.
Responsibilities:
- Provide support during the quarterly Group Investment Committee and Board(s) meeting cycle
- Contribute to the development of the investment income target and strategic investment recommendations made to the Global Investment Committee so as to achieve the investment risk and return objectives of the Boards
- Generate expected risk and return numbers on an ongoing basis, as well as to assess the performance and risk impact of current and proposed investment strategies to maximise investment income for the Group
- Contribute to discussions on tactical investment positioning and implementation
- Support research into new asset classes and investment managers
- Support the management and monitoring of existing and new investment managers
- Help ensure that all investment infrastructure is in place to enable the quick deployment of monies if required, in addition to ongoing management of this infrastructure
- Manage the transition of assets between funds and managers as required
Skills and Experience:
- Educated to a degree level gained in a quantitative discipline (minimum 2:1 or equivalent degree) (for example finance, mathematics, actuarial, economics, science, engineering or investment related discipline)
- Strong problem solving skills
- Good communication skills, both verbal and written
- Strong MS Excel skills, Python skills an advantage
- Desire to quickly develop expertise
- Desire to complete CFA / Actuarial qualifications. Where relevant, financial and study support in achieving professional qualifications will be provided
