Job description
At Microsoft Research Cambridge, our scientists and engineers undertake world-leading, ambitious projects to transform the world through deep research. Our lab has contributed to many of Microsoft’s most successful products, services, and partnerships.
We are currently looking for an experienced optical experimentalist to join our team. The ideal candidate should have a background in optics, electronics, and automation of opto-electronic experimental set-ups.
The Cloud Systems Futures team is a highly cross-disciplinary group of researchers and engineers with diverse expertise across computer science, optical sciences, image processing and engineering. We partner closely with product teams across Microsoft to tackle the big and open challenges of next-generation cloud infrastructure. We create new technologies and develop partnerships with leading academic groups across the world.
During this internship you will work with the researchers in Project AIM. Additionally, as an intern you will be part of the larger internship programme at Microsoft Research, Cambridge.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for building, characterizing and debugging optical experiments that are based upon the group’s ongoing work on the Analog Iterative Machine (AIM). You will have to do experimental work to solve technical problems in optical and electronic systems. You will have to write and work with Python software to control the hardware and process experimental results.
In this role, you will be required to excel in a highly multidisciplinary team. While your primary focus during this internship will be working on optoelectronic experimental set-ups, effective communication of your findings to the broader team is crucial. This will involve identifying potential hardware limitations and proposing how they can be tackled.
Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
The candidate should be studying towards a Ph.D. or have just finished a Master’s degree in in Applied Science or Physics, Photonics, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
The successful candidate must be skilled and bring a strong background in the following areas:
- Hands-on experience with optical and electronic components such as optical sources, photodetectors, amplifiers, and oscilloscopes.
- Troubleshooting of experimental set-ups.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or in a team.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Preferred/Additional Qualifications:
Knowledge/experience in the following domains:
- Non-traditional computing
