Job Title: International Law Officer
Job Location: London Moorfields, Monday to Friday 9.30am to 5.30pm
Salary: £25,524 to £29,212 (dependent on experience) based on 35 hours per week (plus London Weighting if applicable)
Contract Type: Permanent

The International Law Officer will support the work of BRC’s International Law and Policy Department to implement the BRC’s special role in international humanitarian law (IHL) and related fields. The post holder will assist with research and early development of legal briefs and initial advice, and with administrative and logistical support to conferences and other events. The International Law Officer will have a key role in supporting the team’s activities concerning use and misuse of the red cross emblem and designation.

A day in the life of an International Law Officer will involve:
  • To help deal with routine cases of misuse of the red cross emblem and designation and to provide routine advice to colleagues on proposed uses of the red cross emblem and designation.
  • Maintenance of allocated misuse case files, including any relevant research and drafts, and accurate updating of misuse spreadsheet.
  • To maintain and, where necessary, develop systems for monitoring misuse of the protected emblems and designations, and for stopping such misuses; to provide reviews and assessments of emblem misuse cases on a periodic basis.
  • Conduct research for and help prepare legal briefings, advice and presentations.
  • Analyse relevant reports and publications and communicate the summarised information in support of the team’s objectives.
  • Support with the organisation and delivery of external and internal meetings, conferences and other events
  • Attend and engage in key events relating to the team’s strategic works areas and report back accordingly with briefings and summaries.
To be a successful International Law Officer, you'll need:
  • Developing understanding of international humanitarian law or humanitarian contexts
  • Proven research, drafting and editing skills
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to work well as part of a team
  • Desire to work for a department that actively contributes to organisational culture of safeguarding and anti-racism
  • Excellent administration with high attention to detail
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a relevant role or sector
  • Experience of supporting the provision of legal briefings or advice and support within a relevant project / programme / area of responsibility.
  • Experience of coordinating conferences, large-scale external meetings and other events
  • Academic qualification with a focus on public international law, or equivalent work experience (desirable)
