Modelling and estimation of dc-dc converters relies on accurate understanding and characterization of inductor performance. Currently, most widely used approach for estimating inductor performance is estimating ac losses from Quality factor (Q) measurements. This approach, however, does not include all the loss mechanisms in the inductor such as core losses and anomalous losses etc. Hence, a different approach is required to accurately estimate the performance of the inductors. This particularly challenging for new inductor devices with smaller impedances and volumes.

The project will aim to investigate different approaches to characterizing inductor losses. Further, an analytical Steinmetz model will be extracted from the measured loss data. Finally, the Steinmetz models will be used to define a spice circuit to accurately represent the inductor performance.

This project will use equipment’s including network analysers and circuit simulation tools such as NL5 and Cadence. The project will include following tasks
