Africa Practice
Full Time London, England 10.56 - 12.04 GBP Today
Job description

The Company

Africa Practice is an Africa-focused strategic advisory firm operating at the nexus of industry and government. We supply insights and advocacy solutions to corporations, investors, governments and foundations in Africa, enabling them to see more clearly, engage with confidence and unlock value to drive sustainable, equitable development.

Guided by our vision – an influential and prosperous Africa, inspiring the world – we empower organisations to deploy capital and execute development programmes at scale. Our solutions are rooted in a deep appreciation of stakeholders and a conviction that sustainable performance depends on building trust, respecting the environment, solving social problems and creating opportunity.

We operate as one company, with a diverse team working on a hybrid basis in Abuja, Lagos, Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Gaborone, Johannesburg, Cape Town and London. Our people are strategists, political analysts, economists, journalists, policy advisors, lawyers and communications specialists by background. We blend these disciplines to deliver customised and integrated consulting solutions for our clients. Over 80% of our staff are African and over 50% are women.

We are seeking a full-time intern to join our team. This hybrid role is based in London and supports our strategic communications and advocacy work in Africa and internationally. If the successful candidate is based in London, we would expect them to partly work from home and come into the office 2-3 days per week. If the candidate is not based in London, they could come in once a week, or on a mutually agreed schedule.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth open source research and robust analysis on issues, company background, political and commercial context, sustainability issues and trends, and competitor landscape to support client mandates and business development;

  • Continuous monitoring of political and commercial developments, issues and trends across Africa;

  • Monitor and analyse media coverage and stakeholder sentiment on key issues and themes relevant to our clients;

  • Draft and distribute press releases, pitch interviews and feature stories to media on behalf of clients;

  • Develop relevant and engaging content for clients’ social media accounts;

  • Support preparation for strategic client events (e.g. speaker engagement; background briefing notes);

  • Provide strong editing support to project teams to ensure exceptional quality written output (e.g. reports, proposals, presentations).

  • Scope to take more responsibility and lead certain projects depending on your interests and how they evolve throughout the internship period.

Role Requirements

  • Minimum 2:1 degree in social sciences, humanities or other relevant subject

  • Languages: Professionally fluent written and spoken English essential; strong written and spoken French a distinct advantage

  • Excellent communications and digital skills, with creative flair

  • Good grasp of political and economic issues

  • Keen interest in current affairs and curiosity about commercial and political developments in Africa

  • Interest in media and proficiency in social media

  • Good organisation, administrative and prioritisation skills to ensure deadlines are met

  • Strong aptitude for problem-solving and attention to detail

  • Ability/willingness to collaborate effectively with colleagues and clients

  • Willingness to adapt to changing demands in a highly fluid environment

  • Proactively looks for opportunities to improve performance

Studies have shown that women and people of colour are much less likely to apply for a position unless they meet every single qualification. So if you are excited about this role we would love to hear from you. At Africa Practice we are dedicated to building an inclusive, diverse and authentic workplace. You might just be the new team member we are looking for – for this or other roles.
