The Senior Instructor has excellent communication and organizational skills, an exacting eye for detail and solid interpersonal skills. They are able to effectively deliver the curriculum in a professional and engaging manner. They are proactive, applies critical thinking skills, and has a problem-solving approach to every aspect of the job. The successful candidate is a team player and possesses a strong sense of commitment, support and responsibility to the organization as a whole (administration, students, instructors, and staff of all VFS programs), and the VFS model of education.
Senior instructors will maintain a minimum instructional load of 50%.
Job Scope
Reporting to the Head of Department and responsible to Educational Administration and Program Development departments, the Senior Instructor is responsible for curriculum delivery within the discipline as well as providing advanced level instruction in their assigned stream. The Senior Instructor is also responsible for evaluating and updating the department’s curriculum in conjunction with the requirements of the Educational Administration and Program Development departments.
The Senior Instructor maintains familiarity with:
· Current developments in technology, including software and hardware relating to their specific discipline.
· Current educational methods and trends, general knowledge of similar programs relating to their specific discipline.
· Current industry practices, trends and production processes
· The local industry at large including its organization, unions, guilds, and key industry people.
· Program content and delivery within other VFS programs.
Core Responsibilities
Working in conjunction with Educational Administration / Program Development and the Head of Department, the primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Curriculum Development
· Identify areas where curriculum requires development based on student requirements and industry needs.
· Implement curriculum changes that conform to the VFS model of education and which reflect current industry practices.
· Document existing and newly developed curriculum, ensuring one-sheet, course outlines and lesson plans are accurate prior to every term and filed for access on VFS server and Moodle.
Curriculum Delivery
· Ensure that curriculum is delivered in an effective manner and within program budgets.
· Research and plan for curriculum changes in advance of implementation, taking into consideration all relevant factors (i.e., learning spaces, instructional design, staffing, software/hardware).
· Work collaboratively with other Senior Instructors to ensure curriculum goals and delivery are consistent within the program and fulfill the goals of the institution.
· Recommend hires, supervise, and assist with the evaluation of full and part-time instructors, including classroom observations and providing post-observation feedback.
· Organize and/or participate in teaching demos for potential new hires.
· Maintain a professional relationship with currently-enrolled students.
· Monitor students' performance and provide assistance and mentoring when required.
· Ensure that production based activities are relevant to the curriculum and the industry and delivered within safety requirements and budget.
· Evaluate curriculum delivery through the setting and implementation of objective based student performance standards.
Student Issues
· Ensure that all relevant performance and behavior-related discussion between faculty and student is documented and forwarded to department administration and VFS Educational Administration.
· Proactively report to the Head of Department any student concerns, issues, or disputes.
Inter-Department Collaboration
· Network with other Senior Instructors to enhance inter-departmental collaboration for courses and student projects.
Skills, Experience, and Education
· Post-secondary certificate, diploma, degree plus three years of industry experience or minimum five years of strong industry experience.
· Teaching experience is an asset
· A solid understanding of all aspects of particular area of expertise in the program discipline.
