What You’ll Do:
The Principal Learning Experience Designer in Standards & Assessment is responsible for driving consistency and innovation in the approach to standards- and skills-based planning, teaching, assessment, and differentiation across Core product lines. Using strong strategic thinking and influence, this role leverages and applies expertise in K–12 digital product development and customization of standards-based curricula and assessments across many states. The person is expected to bring consistency to customization and development processes and the digital user experience of standards-based/skills-based discovery and reporting across Core programs. This work will also align with key connected supplemental and intervention offerings. In addition, the Principal will be accountable for establishing consistency in content and item-tagging within Core programs to power data-driven recommendations from integrated assessment systems.
The Principal understands the needs of students, educators, and administrators, especially in using standards to measure student proficiency. Because this person leads and works across teams and lines of business, they must model problem-solving prowess, clear systems thinking, effective collaboration, presentation skills, and influence to advance the work and goals.
Working in Learning Experience Design (LXD), the Principal will be responsible for the following primary duties:
User Experience and Instructional Design:
Drives and influences the end-to-end user journey for digital standards-based teaching and assessment experiences for Core users on HMH's teaching and learning platform working in collaboration and partnership with other teams
Serves as the voice of Core customers for standards, skills, assessment, and reporting requirements after synthesizing and aligning requirements across product lines, using qualitative data, quantitative data, and competitor offerings to drive priorities
Works closely with both platform and product development teams to concept, validate, and implement digital-first solutions for standards-based teaching/assessment that solve teacher and administrator pain points
Drives consistency in how HMH Core programs approach diagnostic, formative, summative, and benchmark assessments in Core programs, as well as consistency in the relationship between instruction, practice, and assessment
Liaises with Applied Learning Sciences on best practices and POCs around assessment, standards use, and learning spine applications
Agile Development:
Manage a backlog of standards needs across all groups in Core, working across scrum teams to understand the highest priorities
Understands, applies, and models agile story-pointing and ceremonies in such a way as to ensure work is completed on time and is of high quality. Establishes and uses cross-team ceremonies and prioritization to ensure that information and interdependencies are transparent and well-understood
Process
Define process and communication to address and track changes in standards or assessments across states, tailoring information to audience (Product Management, LXD, etc.), working closely with support teams to determine how systems automation might support the need
Establishes and drives Core-wide process and timeline for efficient content and item tagging to support data-driven reporting and recommendations tied to partner assessment systems
Data Analysis:
Seeks out, applies, and synthesizes data from a variety of sources, including HMH's teaching and learning platform, to address pain points related to state-specific standards within our experience
Understands, utilizes, and trains others in analyzing usage and efficacy data (e.g., task difficulty, time on task, growth data as connected via the spine) to lead the team in further iterating/improving upon instructional content and assessment items
People:
Seeks opportunities for deepening knowledge and expertise in the market environment, pedagogical and content issues, machine learning/automation, and process improvements
Mentors and guides others in such a way as to hold themselves and others accountable and grow strengths across cross-functional teams
Definition of Success:
User satisfaction metrics for standards-related digital experiences (NPS, third-party reviews, etc.)
Iterative deliveries and enhancements to external user and internal author experience related to standards and skills
Forward, decisive progress in interdependent, cross-functional standards and skills work
Organizational transparency and shared understanding of standards- and skills-based experiences and improvements
What you’ll need:
Minimum 8 years of Ed Tech industry experience
Bachelor’s Degree, preferred areas of study: Education or Instructional Design
Expertise in instructional design and informational architecture, along with digital product development, metadata, and delivery
Deep knowledge of curriculum standards and criteria for evaluating instructional materials from various states, large school districts, and national organizations
Comfortable working in a variety of digital authoring tools and content management systems
Passionate about creating engaging and effective (fun!) learning products
Comfort with ambiguity and interdependencies; seasoned ability to step forward and drive change
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
Agile, digital CMS, data analysis/interpretation
Preferred but not necessary: skills/education/experience/working knowledge
Proficiency in JIRA
Teaching experience/experience working in a K–12 (primary or secondary) education setting a strong asset
Experience with platform partner and system integrations (joining disparate assessments, systems, and content to drive personalized standards- and skill-based curriculum recommendations)
