Public Protection have an exciting opportunity at the heart to trialling a new approach to delivering the trading standards service. The trading standards service is responsible for enforcing thousands of laws aimed at ensuring fair and safe trading for businesses and consumers.
You will be responsible for gathering information from complaints and other sources about all manner of things from cold callers, to the sale of unroadworthy vehicles, underage sales of alcohol and tobacco and harmful food containing undeclared allergens amongst many other things. Following strict guidelines, you will turn this information into intelligence upon which the trading standards officers’ activities will be based. You will share this information with our partners including the police and other local authority trading standards services where appropriate. You will also conduct our satisfaction surveying to help us gauge how well we are delivering our services and make improvements for the benefit of all of our customers.
Full training for this role will be given, you will however need an abundance of ‘can do attitude’ and the ability to get things done. You will be writing reports and undertaking some basic maths. There is also lots of technical language and jargon to contend with. You will find experience of using different information databases advantageous as you will be using many different ones on a daily basis. You will also enjoy researching the internet for information. Ensuring excellent customer service and a professional telephone manner will also be key.

As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level C2: Can express him/herself spontaneously at length with a natural conversational flow, avoiding or backtracking around any difficulty so smoothly that the person with whom they are conversing is hardly aware of it.
