HR Manager (ref 1655)
£50-£65k DOE + excellent benefits and bonus structure
Our client is a leading set of chambers and a member of the Bar Magic Circle. They operate in the
Civil Law arena and have over 120 barrister members and 37 staff members. Chambers is based in the Temple and has recently moved back into their state-of-the-art fully refurbished offices overlooking Middle Temple Gardens.
Our client is seeking applications for the position of HR Manager, this is a new role following an internal promotion. The successful candidate will take responsibility for matters across the staff team dealing with a broad range; from recruitment to performance reviews, wage reviews, disciplinary action, as well as staff learning and development.
This is a wide-ranging role with additional responsibilities which include: Supporting the Chambers’
Equality & Diversity officers and the Diversity Data officer in developing relevant policies applicable to both staff and barrister members of Chambers and in the collection of equality and diversity data as required by the Bar Standards Board. Supporting the Chambers Director and the Graduate
Recruitment manager in the provision of feedback to candidates to Chambers.
This is a standalone role but reports to the Chambers director.
Responsibilities include:
- Recruitment of high quality staff
- Carrying out necessary administrative duties including but not limited to the running and maintaining of a smooth onboarding/off boarding process, to include probationary reviews and exit interviews
- Reviewing, reporting to senior management and updating/developing clear staff policies and ensuring policy awareness
- Taking responsibility for the updating and communication of staff terms and conditions of employment including HR and health and safety related policies and procedures
- Providing concise monthly reports to senior management on staff issues, including reporting on workplace health and safety compliance, working with the facilities manager as required
- Offering support, advice and mentoring for staff members where needed
- Helping to shape and support Chambers wellbeing strategy and related activities and support
- Ensuring current regulation compliance, including professional standards, policies and procedure with reviews of legislation on data protection, the Equality Act and health and safety
- Supporting the senior management team with advice regarding employee relations and employee performance issues
- Managing staff learning and development processes including performance reviews and appraisals in conjunction with senior management, providing training needs analysis and resourcing, the upkeep of training records and advising senior management on salary reviews linked to performance
- Overseeing the monitoring of employee holiday and other absences
- Resolving any conflicts through positive and professional mediation
- Handling workplace investigations, disciplinary and termination of employment procedures in consultation with senior management
- Production and management of an annual HR budget
Additionally:
- Providing support to the Graduate Recruitment manager in the provision of feedback to applicants at points during the pupillage recruitment cycle (eg on rejection of candidates at paper sift, 1st interview, post assessed mini pupillage and final interview stages)
- Providing support to the Graduate Recruitment manager and the Chambers Director in the collection and processing of equality and diversity data relating to all external recruitment
- Providing assistance to the DDO in the collection and processing of equality and diversity monitoring data for barristers, pupils and staff
The ideal candidate will need:
- Experience of providing professional and commercial advice across the range of human resource issues
- Experience of supporting a senior management team
- Have a good working knowledge and understanding of employment regulations
- Excellent communication skills with an ability to engage and influence
- Demonstrate experience of dealing with complex and sensitive employee relation issues
- Offer experience of mentoring and managing others
- The ability to accept and provide feedback, be challenged on their advice and work well under pressure
- Strong competency in Microsoft applications including word, excel and outlook
- Though not a pre-requisite either a graduate qualification in a relevant area, or a CIPD or equivalent accreditation or qualification would be an advantage.

- Core working hours 9am – 6pm
- 3 months’ notice on both sides upon completion of a 3 month probation period. During the probation period, a 4 week notice period for either party applies
