Job Purpose
You will provide professional HR advice and support as a professional business partner for designated service areas to ensure the delivery of a pro-active, solutions focussed POD service aligned to the achievement of the University’s strategic objectives. As a member of the College POD team, contribute to the development and implementation of POD policies and procedures on a local and College/University-wide basis.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Contribute to the delivery of a consultancy style HR business partner approach by gaining an understanding of business needs and challenges across the College and the wider University. Work with managers to assist in developing and enabling effective culture, people management and leadership capabilities and the provision of HR advice, support, coaching and training on a wide range of people and organisational design issues.
2. As assigned, support Heads of School, Heads of Subject, Director of College Professional Service, Heads of Function, Heads of Professional Services and other managers on a broad range of HR issues, including employee relations issues such as discipline, grievance, performance management, pay and reward, absence management, redundancy and restructuring/organisational change and organisational design and culture.
3. Act as HR lead on case work, working with managers on analysis, gathering necessary background information, identifying and assessing options, and supporting decision-making in the adoption of appropriate and pro-active HR solutions, whilst managing/minimising associated risks and aligning behaviours with our culture and values.
4. Participate in recruitment, selection and job evaluation/matching processes, including providing advice to managers in the development of job descriptions, short-listing, and interviewing. This activity includes contributing to job design, work analysis and organisational structure, assessing and determining appropriate role grading and involvement in regrading procedures, ensuring the objectivity, transparency and integrity of the University grading structure in accordance with equal pay principles.
5. Source, interpret and analyse relevant management information to assist in workforce planning, talent management and other processes, engaging with Heads of School, Heads of Service/Administration and other managers to discuss, agree and implement associated action plans.
6. Advise Heads of School and other managers and staff on the University’s Performance and Development Review Policy, co-ordinating relevant procedures, analysis, collation and communication of outcomes and other follow up actions.
7. Support the College Head of Human Resources in delivering projects and change initiatives, such as restructuring activities, staff survey activity and the introduction of new policies/systems.
8. Contribute to the development, implementation and maintenance of policies and procedures including the undertaking of research activities, drafting policy/procedures for review by the senior College/wider HR team, presenting briefing sessions to managers/staff as part of policy roll-out activities and contributing to the review of associated business processes.
9. Work closely with the corporate HR function within the University’s devolved HR model in relation to recruitment, pay performance and reward, HR systems, equality and diversity, policy and learning and development issues to ensure the provision of a seamless POD service to customers.
10. Lead the delivery of specific College POD projects, and contribute to University-wide projects, that contribute to the implementation of College strategic priorities and the University’s People Strategy.
11. Play an active role in promoting positive trade union consultation and good employee relations through direct consultation with trade union representatives, participating in and leading when required, relevant negotiating and consultative fora.
12. Support, and where required supervise, the College POD administration team members, supporting development to ensure that an excellent POD service is provided across all areas of activity. Contribute to the establishment of College POD team objectives, service standards and reputation.
13. Participate in College/University POD related committees and working groups as required, including School level Athena SWAN Self Assessment Teams.
14. Maintain personal and professional knowledge through CPD, keeping up to date with developments in employment practice, law and University POD strategy, policies and procedures. Provide professional support by alerting colleagues to, and preparing papers assessing the impact of, relevant employment practice developments and legal updates.
15. Undertake other tasks and duties as assigned from time to time by the College of Human Resources.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9 (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4) in relevant subject (i.e. Human Resource Management, Business Management, etc.) or equivalent relevant professional HR generalist experience
A2 Ideally CIPD Level 7 qualification
A3 Well developed knowledge of HR best practice and employment legislation
Desirable
B1 Knowledge of job evaluation methodologies, especially Hay
B2 Knowledge of HR/Payroll systems

C1 Ability to adopt a consultancy style, HR business partnering approach, with proven influencing, judgement, analytical and problem solving ability
C2 Excellent organisational skills with the ability to plan, prioritise and deliver across a range of work activities and juggle a busy workload
C3 Ability to interpret relevant University policies, employment legislation and good practice and apply to complex cases
C4 Highly effective written and oral communication skills with the ability to draft accurate, concise and comprehensive reports and letters and articulate complex information in an accessible way and present to varied staff groups
C5 Excellent IT skills, including a high level of competency in the use of Microsoft Office applications and data manipulation
C6 Confident, credible and resilient with the ability to effectively manage conflict and demanding clients
C7 Articulate and persuasive – ability to persuade clients at all levels within the University on a range of matters, some of which may not be popular or within the experience of the audience
C8 Ability to work independently, lead on activities where required and contribute as a team player
C9 Ability to maintain confidentiality and deal sensitively with related issues/individuals with tact, diplomacy and discretion

E1 A proven track record of working in POD at a professional level within a complex operating environment
E2 Experience of providing high quality advice and guidance on a range of POD matters including the application of POD policy
E3 A track record of successfully handling an HR case work portfolio, including absence management, discipline and grievance investigations and hearings etc
Desirable
F1 Experience of Higher Education, particularly experience of working in academic units
F2 Experience of developing POD policy, procedure and management guidance
F3 Experience of delivering presentations and management training
F4 Experience of consulting and negotiating with trade unions
F5 Experience of organisational change/restructuring activities
F6 Experience of supervising and managing performance and development
Whilst the role will initially be based in the College of Arts it may to move to a different area within the wider POD team at a future date, dependent on future business need. The role itself is however open ended.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £38,474 - £43,155 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended.
