Job description
Dunlop Ward requires an enthusiastic ward housekeeper to join the team. The successful candidate will need to be flexible with working patterns, be organised and able to work in a busy fast paced environment.
The role includes ensuring the overall tidiness of the ward, ordering of stock and reporting of faulty equipment. You will also be required to liaise closely with patients, relatives and members of the multidisciplinary team.
Dunlop ward is within the cardiology department and has 24 beds.
- To monitor the environment to ensure all areas are clean and tidy. Remove clutter, tidy notice boards. Participate in ward/unit environmental audits.
- To collect and deliver equipment and other items from and to other areas of the hospital as required.
- To maintain stock levels in all clinical areas, liaising with material management staff to rectify any problems or shortfalls.
- To have good interpersonal skills. Demonstrate a caring, compassionate and friendly attitude. Able to deal with sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy and be approachable.

- To liaise with the Hotel Services Supervisors to ensure that curtains are changed as per policy.
- To ensure all specialist and general equipment is cleaned and decontaminated in accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines to Trust standards (
- e.g. drip stands, hoists, mattresses, infusion pumps, commodes etc)
- To ensure that following the discharge of a patient, the bed frame and mattress, bed area and locker are cleaned and the bed is made in preparation for incoming patients (Soap and paper towels are replenished and the bed area is generally tidy) Oxygen and suction units are clean and in working condition.

- To report any faults or damage to the fabric of the department to Estates and record in environment file.
- To ensure that all soap/alcohol/glove and apron dispensers are clean and replenished.
- To collect and deliver equipment and other items from and to other areas of the hospital as required.
- Participate in the preparation of work areas and replenish stock as required e.g. sluice, treatment rooms, and cannula and venepuncture trolley.
- To maintain stock levels in all clinical areas, liaising with material management staff to rectify any problems or shortfalls.
- Ensure own actions, reduce risks to health & safety and promote a health and safety culture in the workplace.
- Ensure that the day room and staff room are clean and tidy.
- Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
- To undertake a responsible attitude towards economy and care of equipment and property, and be aware of conditions predisposing to accidents.
- Ensure efficient and effective use of resources
- Attend mandatory training and relevant study days to develop own knowledge and skills.
- Ensure compliance with policies procedures and clinical guidelines for self and others.
- Report any incidents, accidents or complaints to the nurse in charge of the ward, in accordance with Trust policy
- To maintain the upkeep of patient bed areas, ensuring lockers, tables and chairs are uncluttered and free from litter.

- To order equipment/stock on appropriate system to ensure all patients, in conjunction with the nursing team.
- To co-ordinate extra meal requirements as they may arise, in conjunction with the ward manager, ensuring that patients receive the meal of their choice.
- Offer light snack or snack box to those patients who have missed a meal.
- To issue hand wipes to each patient to cleanse their hands before and after meals, helping where necessary.
- To ensure, in conjunction with the Catering Department that patient meals are served in a presentable and timely manner and that appropriate cutlery and condiments have been supplied.
- To ensure that all meal tables and eating areas are suitably cleared and prepared for meal times ensuring a pleasant environment and to make sure that they are wiped clean at the end of each meal.
- To ensure that patients have a clean supply of drinking water and a clean glass and water jug.
- To ensure that patients receive any assistance they require to eat and drink i.e. cutting up food, placing food within reach, encouraging patients to eat.
- To serve meals in conjunction with the nursing team, ensuring that patient’s intake is known and that their dietary needs are met.
- To ensure in conjunction with the ward team, that patients are provided with appropriate hot and cold beverages at regular intervals throughout the day and also make beverages as instructed by the ward team.
- To ensure that all nutritional supplements are ordered and appropriately controlled and stored in conjunction with the Dietetic Department and Ward Manager.
- To order snacks and ensure that patients are offered snacks according to Better Hospital Food recommendations.
