Working unsupervised but under the direction of a registered nurse, the post holder will be required to provide a high standard of specialised play and support to children and young people, under the care of the East Midlands Childrens and Young Persons integrated Cancer Service, in their own homes and other community settings as required. The post holder will be required to work as a member of CYPICS outreach team working closely with the Paediatric Oncology Outreach Nurse Specialist (POONS) team caring for families in Nottinghamshire and South Derbyshire The post holder should be a qualified Hospital Play Specialist (HPS) and may hold the NNEB or CACHE Diploma in Nursery Nursing or BTEC National Diploma in Nursery Nursing/Childhood Studies The post holder will be required to work unsupervised but seek appropriate help and guidance as required. To build up relationships with patients and families to support the child and family through treatment To act as the childs advocate ensuring the childs best interests come first. The post holder will need to be able to adapt to different environments and have a flexible schedule whilst booking in visits.
Work with the childs family as a whole, respecting their needs and wishes whilst providing the best care for the child. Devise and implement therapeutic intervention and play activities tailored to each individual childs health and development needs. These activities should be reviewed regularly. Understand the need and the use of preparation, distraction, post procedural and passive play and implement this to support the child and family through treatment.
To understand the need for and initiate the use of specialised therapeutic play. Design and create resources such as bravery certificates and development charts. To provide integral family support, liaising with other professionals as necessary and attending and contributing to meetings as required To provide written and verbal reports as required and ensure familiarity with documentation. Liaise with other professionals within the multi-disciplinary team regarding issues concerning the childs physical, emotional and social needs.
Be aware of issues regarding confidentiality within the hospital and community settings. Be responsible for the general maintenance and cleaning of toys and equipment as required. To teach and demonstrate to parents suitable play activities with their child. Participate in the provision of the ongoing education for children and their families about recreation and play activities To promote the CYPICS service and Childrens Hospital with the development of materials such as information leaflets, websites and presentations.
Attend and contribute to relevant staff and team meetings, regular 1-1 meetings with POONS band 7 or CYPICS Lead Nurse.
