Job description
Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to work in one of the most archaeologically rich counties in the country. We are looking to recruit a Historic Environment Record Assistant to join our Archaeology Service based at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre in Chippenham to focus on our National Record of the Historic Environment to Historic Environment Records (NHRE to HER) data transfer project. The purpose of the project is to transfer the national dataset from Historic England to local authority Historic Environment Records, resulting in a single database and ending potential duplication between national and local records whilst enhancing the whole available resource.
LIVE WORK INNOVATE
About the role
The Archaeology Service works closely with our other heritage teams within the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre. Our role is to identify, record and protect Wiltshire´s historic environment by advising the Council’s planners and negotiating with landowners and developers. Wiltshire is outstanding for its archaeological remains which include well-known monuments such as those in the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site. Each year brings a crop of new discoveries and challenges, as we seek to enable development whilst preserving the remains of the past.
The HER is fundamental to the work of the Archaeology Service and this role plays a key part in ensuring data quality and further development of the HER, ensuring it accurately reflects the depth of archaeological knowledge across Wiltshire and Swindon.
This is a part time (up to 18.5 hours a week) temporary post for 2 years.
About You
Success in the role depends on a detailed knowledge of HER/GIS systems and the historic environment, a high level of IT proficiency and a positive approach to working within a small team and interacting with the public. You will have a methodical and consistent approach to your work with a fine attention to detail and have good written and verbal communication skills. The NRHE to HER project will also require research and accurate transcription from a variety of sources.
You will work with the HER Data Manager to ensure that the information held in the Historic Environment Record is up to date and readily accessible, inputting data from reports, plans, aerial photographs, and other sources. You will also act as a first point of contact for HER enquiries from a wide variety of external and internal organisations and individuals.
Interviews will be held on: 10 May 2023.
