Work for the world you want to live in.

Wouldn’t you want to live in a world where people, populations and the planet thrive? Where technology protects rather than threatens. Where societies feel safe and secure. Where cities and continents feel part of one global community.

We’re an international aerospace, defence and security company, with sites all-round the UK, that do loads of exciting and important things to make the world safer and more secure. We defend nations, save lives and protect communities around the globe.

Devonport:
The Engineering Apprenticeship is based at Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth.

Working at Devonport puts the best of the South West at your fingertips. Amazing scenery, vibrant towns and numerous leisure opportunities - It’s why Devon and Cornwall are such desirable places to live and work.

Comprising of 14 dry docks, four miles of waterfront and 25 tidal berths, Devonport is the base for numerous surface vessels as well as the base and refit centre for the Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered submarines. Devonport has also recently been selected as the base port for the Navy’s new Type 26 frigates and will become the maintenance centre for the future submarine programme.

For more than a century, Babcock, the Aerospace and Defence Company, has been trusted to deliver bespoke, highly-skilled engineering services. We help customers in the UK and around the world to improve the capability, reliability and availability of their most critical assets within the four market sectors of Marine, Land, Aviation, and Nuclear, underpinned by a deep understanding of technology integration, unique infrastructure and specialist training.

Higher Level Engineering Apprenticeship:
Our Higher Level engineering apprenticeships cover 3 distinct trades, one of which you will follow, the options include: Mechanical, Electrical and Naval Architecture.

Irrespective of the trade route you are assigned to, as part of your role you will gather information and data from a range of sources and analyse the information/data. You will make decisions, solve problems and produce and/or update technical documentation, reports or specifications covering areas such as quality, reliability, production schedules/targets, costing or other technical documentation that informs others, either internally or externally what needs to be done such as how a product must be designed, manufactured, tested, modified, maintained, stored, transported, commissioned or decommissioned.

Possible placements:
Apprentices will spend their full first year at College, followed by 1 day per week in years 2 and 3 with the other 4 days per week onsite. The 4th year will be spent exclusively onsite.
All apprentices will work at a variety of locations across the site and will move around to gain an insight into all of the operations we undertake.

Qualifications you’ll gain:
You will gain a HNC in Engineering before the culmination of the apprenticeship End Point Assessment, which after passing, will gain you the nationally recognised apprenticeship certificate as a Level 4 Engineering Manufacturing Technician.

What you’ll need:
A minimum of 3 A-Levels (or equivalent) at grade C or above, including Maths and a Science or Technology based subject.

What you’ll get:

Generous benefits including:
  • Very competitive starting salary
  • Fully funded qualification
  • Personal development training and opportunities
  • Pension scheme with employee contributions matched up to 8% of salary
  • 25 days holidays plus bank holidays
  • Discounted shopping and half-price cinema tickets
  • Cycle to work scheme
