Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and capable Heritage Consultant or Senior Heritage Consultant to join our Bristol studio. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the successful management and conservation of important heritage assets in the south-west and further afield.
If you are a Senior Heritage Consultant or an experienced Heritage Consultant looking to take that next step, we are looking for a diligent and skilful individual who can inspire creativity and confidence amongst clients, consultants and colleagues alike, delivering excellent advice, promoting Purcell and conservation, and developing new business opportunities. We will consider both part time and full-time applicants.

The successful candidate will be based in our Bristol studio, supporting the team’s architectural projects as required and working autonomously to lead standalone heritage consultancy projects.
Responsibilities will include:
  • Providing sound and ethical advice concerning the appropriate conservation of the historic environment
  • Regularly communicating with the regional heritage consultancy team, including reporting to a designated line manager
  • Managing a busy workload to meet deadlines
  • Delegating tasks to assistant heritage consultants and preparing comprehensive briefs for them
  • Actively seeking to win an engaging portfolio of work through business development, preparing competitive fee proposals and contributing to tenders
  • Preparing thorough, concise and well-structured heritage reports
  • Managing project budgets and financial monitoring
  • Where appropriate, manage subconsultants
  • Travelling across the region, including supporting colleagues in our Oxford studio (travelling nationally may also be required)
Skills and Qualifications:
  • First degree in architectural history, archaeology, building conservation or other relevant subject area
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a similar role (or 4 years’ experience for a senior position)
  • Experience preparing heritage statements (/listed building consent reporting) and advising design teams
  • Experience preparing conservation management plans, conservation area appraisals and other heritage reports
  • Experience assessing and advising on a varied range of heritage assets (period, style and designations)
  • Existing network and knowledge of business opportunities in the south-west, particularly Bristol and Bath
  • Ability to work independently and within a team, as per the requirements of the project
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to work within a budget
  • Agility to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Excellent communication, particularly writing in a clear and concise manner
  • Curiosity and commitment to continued professional development
Desirable:
  • Full IHBC membership or other relevant professional accreditation
  • Experience in preparing fee proposals and tenders
  • Knowledge of RIBA work stages
  • UK driving license
