Job introduction

We are looking for an inspiring leader and manager with vision and verve to transform Brighton & Hove making it one of the most physically active cities in the country.

This leader will provide strategic direction and momentum for the development of physical activity in Brighton & Hove, working across council teams and a diversity of organisations in the city, including businesses, communities, charities and sport clubs at all levels.

The role is full time and permanent

Interview date: to be confirmed but provisionally 7th June 2023

For an informal discussion, please contact Jimmy Burke - Health Improvement Programme Manager on 07966 019406.

About the role

Everyone can benefit physically, mentally, socially and emotionally from physical activity and we want to bring families, communities and friends together to enjoy quality time and have fun.

We want all communities to have equal health outcomes and so we prioritise support for communities that experience the biggest challenges in being physically active and benefitting from improved health and well-being.

We want residents who have long-term physical or mental health conditions and those who are socially isolated to be given the opportunities and encouragement to enjoy and benefit from an appropriate level of physical activity, addressing the additional challenges and barriers that these people face.

As the Healthy Lifestyles Manager for Physical Activity within the Public Health Team, you will provide leadership and support to a dynamic and passionate team of 12 physical activity specialists plus a large team of enthusiastic volunteers, who deliver hundreds of physical activity sessions to thousands of local residents ever year—from Zumba to Healthwalks on the South Downs; from interschool sports events to chair-based exercise for older people; from swimming sessions for the trans community to our annual Dance Active Event and our flagship Takepart Festival.

You will be responsible for the delivery of our ambitious soon-to-be-launched 10-year Brighton & Hove Sport and Physical Activity Strategy, making our aspiration to be one of the most active cities in England a reality.

If you have the passion, the experience and the boldness to work strategically across a diversity of organisations and communities in the city, networking, forging alliances, building consensus for change and leading the local system to make physical activity a part of everyone’s lives, then this role might be for you.

We welcome applications from people with lived experience of health inequality and knowledge of local communities.

Please read our Apply for a job at the council (brighton-hove.gov.uk) pages carefully. They give you all the guidance you need to complete your application as well as information on what will happen after you’ve submitted your application and at interview.

As part of your application, you will need to complete your education and work history and provide answers to some shortlisting questions. Your answers to the shortlisting questions are the most important part of your application as they will be used in the shortlisting process to assess whether you meet the essential requirements for the role that are set out in the person specification and to decide whether you should be offered an interview. Before you start your application, please read our guidance here (Shortlisting questions guidance (brighton-hove.gov.uk) as this gives important advice which will increase your chance of success in the shortlisting process.

Additional information

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is less than 37 hours or term-time only.

Work Permits: We may be able to obtain a Work Permit for this post but this is subject to meeting the requirements of the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) Points-based Immigration System. Please see Gov.uk for more information on the Skilled Worker Visa.

The base for this job is principally St. Bartholemew's House in Brighton, though the postholder will be expected to work from King Alfred's Leisure Centre in Hove, Hove Town Hall and other locations across the city as required by business needs. There will also be occasional hybrid working from home if desired.
