Job summary
The Respiratory and Vaccine Preventable Bacteria Reference Unit (RVPBRU), is an ISO accredited laboratory, and part of the Bacteriology Reference Department (BRD), UKHSA in Colindale, London. The RVPBRU comprises two sections, the Vaccine Preventable Bacteria Section (VPBS) and the Zoonotic and Acute Respiratory Section (ZARS).
The Healthcare Scientist is to provide specialist reference laboratory support work within the Zoonotic and Acute Respiratory Section by providing technical support as appropriate in accordance with UKHSA and laboratory policies and procedures, with emphasis on reference services for Legionella, Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma and Respiratory Chlamydia; with particular focus on areas of detection, identification and characterisation using phenotypic and molecular methods.

Job description
Laboratory technical delivery of national reference activities for the organisms within the ZARS remit to include:
Technical and Scientific Duties
- In conjunction with Section Head and SEO be responsible for the implementation and day-today running of the routine reference services within the Section remit.
- Analysis and archiving of referred clinical specimens and isolates submitted to the Section.
- Analysis of clinical specimens by culture, phenotypic testing, ELISA, PCR and sequencing to detect, isolate, identify and characterise relevant zoonotic and respiratory pathogens within the Section.
- Undertake routine Legionella pneumophila urinary antigen testing (Bartels and Binax assays)
- Undertake DNA extraction, real time PCR, block-based PCR (for Sanger Sequencing) for detection, species identification and molecular typing using sequence-based typing (SBT) and preparation of DNA for whole genome sequencing (WGS).
- To maintain and keep accurate records of all work undertaken.
- To be responsible for the reading and analysis of test results generated and entry of results onto the LIMS system.
- Collate and present data for discussion.

- Attend meetings, plan and implement project plans.

- To participate in and support the R&D activities within the laboratory and the organisation.

- Ensure that routine services are maintained/designed to a satisfactory standard.
- Take responsibility for maintenance and acquisition of stock in order to ensure adequate service provision and continuity.
- Monitor the performance and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
General Employment Responsibilities
- Ensure confidentiality and conformity to the requirements of the Data Protection Act in collaboration with the designated Caldicott Guardian, Data Protection Officer and Security of Information Officer.
- Actively participate and maintain a continuing professional development programme and be aware of relevant developments in microbiology and other biomedical science.

Person specification
Essential Criteria
- BSc or equivalent in a biological science.
- Experience in microbiology laboratory techniques including culture and molecular assays
- Knowledge of relevant pathogens within the Section
- Experience in use of LIMS, and a range of common software (Microsoft Office, Access)
- Good communicator and team worker with leadership skills. Able to organise own workload and delegated priorities to junior staff.
- Confident in presentation of ideas and information with excellent analytical skills. Excellent time management skills and good organisation skills with particular attention to detail.
- Self-motivating, organized and meticulous, and able to problem solve in a calm and efficient manner.
Desirable Criteria
- HCPC Registration, CPD registration and certification
- Experience and/or understanding of scientific principles of molecular assays including RT-PCR and sequencing technologies, and ELISA assays
- Basic knowledge of project principles

Selection process details
STAGE 1 - APPLICATION & SIFT:

If you are successful at this stage, you will progress to a face-to-face interview based at UKHSA Colindale, London. Alternatively, a Teams interview can be offered.
