Job description
The UK Health Security Agency’s Reference Services Division are seeking a full time Healthcare Scientist at their Colindale site. The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Unit within UKHSA, generates key surveillance data on genotype-specific HPV infection and associated diseases in relation to sexual health issues and HPV vaccine impact monitoring. In collaboration with epidemiologists and mathematical modellers, the research is used to inform national policies on the deployment of the HPV vaccines and sexual health programmes.
Main Responsibilities- Perform, interpret and record test results according to given protocols.
- Use of various manual and automated nucleic acid extraction protocols, DNA visualisation, DNA purification, DNA sequencing and quantification methods
- Use of block-based PCR and realtime PCR
- Use of multiplex Luminex®-based genotyping and serology.
- Contribute to the reception, processing, storage and management of the laboratory specimens.
- Enter results onto the Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
- Take responsibility for maintenance/acquisition of stock in order to ensure adequate service provision and continuity.
- Develop working relationships and communicate regularly with a wide range of individuals, clinical and non-clinical, internal and external to UKHSA.
This is a fixed term 6 month role,
The Ideal Candidate- BSc in biological sciences, or equivalent industry experience.
- Previous experience of working in a microbiological diagnostic laboratory in a similar role.
- Experience with quality assurance and safety principles and procedures.
- Able to work carefully, with precision and be able to balance laboratory duties with accurate record keeping.
- Experience of using multiplex analysers e.g. Luminex® is desirable, however not essential.
- HCPC registration is desired, however not essential.
